Canadian Banking Technology at Scotiabank supports the full spectrum of technology needs for the bank's Canadian operations, covering various banking products and services. The team works with both traditional and emerging technologies to deliver innovative solutions for business applications and platforms.
Our team contributes to the success of the Day to Day Savings products in Canada, supporting Business, Canadian Banking Regulatory, and Compliance initiatives, including development, design, and deployment.
The Mainframe COBOL Developer, reporting to the Senior Manager Development, will lead various development projects and support application solutions for the Canadian business line. They will collaborate with multiple teams to deliver requirements for regulatory and compliance platforms. Ideal candidates should be proactive, creative, show initiative, eager to learn, and thrive on challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Act as an expert technical resource for problem analysis and solution implementation.
- Support applications, evaluate problems, identify actions to be taken, and recommend/implement solutions in accordance with Bank architectural guidelines.
- Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
- Interact with business clients to resolve and explain system questions and issues.
- Work closely with team members, external vendors, Business partners, Internal stakeholders, and Management.
- Provide analysis and coding support for host applications and infrastructure implementations.
- Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.

- Embrace change and seek continuous improvement.
- Mentor junior developers on design, development, delivery, operations, and best practices.
- Implement new systems or enhancements, review programs, establish testing procedures, develop documentation, and support production functionality.
- Participate in pager rotation for 24x7 application support.
- Understand and incorporate the Bank’s risk culture in daily activities.

Minimum Skills and Experience:
- 5+ years of mainframe development experience using Assembler, Cobol, JCL, IMS DB/DC, DB2, VSAM, CICS, CA7, SAS, SDSF.
- Experience with Assembler programming language.
- Knowledge of Utilities and productivity tools (e.g., MVS/TSO, UCANDU, ACR, etc.) is an asset.
- Experience working in an agile environment and SDLC methodology.
- Understanding of File Transfer protocols (FTP, SFTP, PGP Encryption).
- Strong knowledge of DB2, z/OS Debugger, DFSORT, JCL, and COBOL.
- Knowledge of DevOps practices.
- Experience with Assembly language, web services, APIs, web and cloud (Azure) technologies is an asset.
- Prior experience in production support.
- Fluent in English, both oral and written.
- Undergraduate Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
- Understanding of current IT practices, systems development, data integration, streaming, WebSphere MQ, and communication networks.
- Familiarity with data modeling, data architecture, UNIX RHEL 8.x support (2-3 years).
