Job summary

The Town of Milton seeks a Performing Arts Instructor to deliver Junior and Senior Performing Arts classes at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton for ages 7–12. You will create engaging experiences, provide clear program outlines, and lead sessions under the coordinator’s guidance.

Responsibilities include safety, adapting activities, communicating with parents, and supervising volunteers. A strong background in arts education and delivery is essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years teaching or program instruction experience.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR required.
  • NCCP required for sports related programming.
  • Post-secondary education in arts, design, drama, music or dance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver lesson plans for ages 7–12.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to volunteers and staff.
  • Maintain attendance and program records; communicate with participants’ families.

As the Performing Arts Instructor, you’ll be responsible for providing instruction and artistic support to Junior and Senior Performing Arts classes at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, ages 7 - 12. This position reports to the Coordinator, Cultural Services (Programming & Outreach).Major Job ResponsibilitiesMajor Job ResponsibilitiesProgram implementation with a focus on quality customer experiences:Ensure a safe and well-supervised learning environment is provided, while encouraging individuals to actively participateProvide participants with a program outline for the seasonFacilitate a lecture and or demonstration of an assigned topic at each classEnsure daily programming is adapted to all program participant needsReceive all parent/participant (as applicable based on programming) concerns and communicate concerns or incidents to supervisorProvide sufficient time for participants to work independently and provide one-on-one assistance when requiredProvide guidance and oversight of volunteersProvide guidance and oversight of assistant staffEstablish positive relationships and clear communication channels with all staff and participantsMaintain a safe and clean facility including proper usage and use of equipment. Proactively communicate program needs to facility operations staff and communicate any facility or equipment deficiencies to supervisor.Evaluate situations for potential risks and proactively take action to address such risks. Communicate any action or concerns to supervisor.Maintain communication with customer service desk to provide relevant program updates and to request support in the event of an emergencyMaintain a high level of professionalism and handle sensitive situations with mature judgement.Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety ActAdministrative Tasks:Develop and prepare a material list and lesson plans to meet the needs of the program and participantsModify lesson plans as necessary based on program participant needsProvide lesson plans, regular updates and feedback to immediate SupervisorAttend all mandatory staff functions: training, meetings and all allocated program timesReport any accidents, incidents, to the Coordinator, ensuring all appropriate forms are filled out accurately and completedSubmit required forms (including payroll)Maintain accurate attendance and other administrative records as requiredEducation & ExperienceEducation & ExperienceSecondary School DiplomaMinimum of three (3) years teaching/program instruction experienceStandard First Aid and CPR CHIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development (children’s programs)NCCP required for sports related programmingPost-Secondary Education related to specialized field (i.e. visual art, design and/or craft, drama, music, dance) is preferredEarly Childhood Education Certificate (children’s programs) is an assetCertifications/workshops in a related field is an assetCrisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent is an assetStrong knowledge and aptitude in a specific area of interest/specialized field (e.g. art history, including contemporary practice, languages, music, dance, wellness)Familiar with a variety of artistic techniques, practices and materials with one or more of the following interests/skills: painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, hand building, clay sculpture (Visual Art programs only) or drama, music, choreography, dance, theatre (Performing Art programs only)Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector ScreeningExcellent interpersonal and communication skillsEffective program planning and service delivery skillsExperience working with targeted age group and persons with special need is an assetNote to ApplicantsThis posting is for an existing job vacancy.The Town is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, accessible, and respectful workplace.
