Job summary

Niagara College in Welland invites applications for the position of Professor, Police Foundations in the School of Justice and Fitness Studies, commencing January 2027 at the Welland Campus.

The successful candidate will deliver courses in PSI/PF/ALEI programs, design and update curricula, engage with stakeholders, and foster an inclusive learning environment that supports student achievement and success across in-person, hybrid, and online formats.

Qualifications

• Minimum three-year undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology or a related field of study.
• Minimum of five years recent practical work experience in an Ontario Police service.
• Recent experience with police use of force legislation, implementation and training, specifically the Ontario Public-Police Intervention Model.
• Demonstrated networking with stakeholders including Law Enforcement, Corrections and Security professionals.
• Proven dedication to teaching excellence and student success.
• Experience delivering post-secondary courses in-person, hybrid, synchronous/asynchronous online.
• Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion with adult learners.
• Commitment to guiding and supporting post-secondary students toward success.
• Understanding curriculum design, course development, delivery and evaluation.
• Excellent written/oral communication, organizational, problem solving and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

Job description

Applications are invited for the position of Professor, Police Foundations in the School of Justice and Fitness Studies. This position will commence January 2027 at the Welland Campus.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Justice and Fitness Studies, this exciting role requires the successful candidate to provide an invitational learning environment to deliver courses in the Protection, Security and Investigation/Police Foundations/Advanced Law Enforcement and Investigations (PSI/PF/ALEI) programs, with specific focus relating to the Police Foundations and Advanced Law Enforcement Programs stream.

The Professor position is responsible for providing academic leadership and developing an effective learning environment for students. The successful candidate should aspire to provide academic excellence in the learning environment, thus enabling our students to achieve success in their careers. This includes designing, revising and updating courses/curriculum; teaching assigned courses; consulting with stakeholders (faculty, community and industry partners); defining course objectives and evaluating student comprehension of objectives; utilize a variety of instruction medium /resources; and provide individualized instruction where necessary. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Required qualifications:

• Minimum three (3) year undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology or a related field of study
• Minimum of five (5) years recent practical work experience in an Ontario Police service
• Recent experience with police use of force legislation, implementation and training, specifically the Ontario Public-Police Intervention Model
• Demonstrated recent networking skills with a variety of stakeholders within the field of expertise including Law Enforcement, Corrections and Security professionals and other related career paths
• Proven dedication to excellence in teaching and learning practices as well as commitment to student success
• Experience delivering post-secondary courses in a variety of methods (in-person, hybrid, synchronous/asynchronous online)
• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion with adult learners
• Evidence of commitment to guiding and supporting post-secondary students toward success
• Proven understanding of curriculum design, course development, delivery and evaluation
• Excellent written/oral communication, organizational, problem solving and analytical skills

Preferred candidates may also possess:

• A Master's degree in Education or a related field
• Joint-Force police Project experience and/or inter-agency operability training
• Experience in providing in-service training to active police officers
