Job summary

Medicine Hat Public School Division is seeking a dedicated Custodian for the evening shift at Alexandra Middle School in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The role involves cleaning classrooms, restrooms, offices and common areas to maintain a safe, welcoming environment.

You will also secure the building, restock supplies, support events, and perform seasonal outdoor tasks. This is a full-time union position requiring flexibility and reliability.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 6 months custodial or building maintenance preferred.
• Valid WHMIS certification required.
• Ability to operate custodial equipment (scrubbers, vacuums).
• Proficient with basic computer tasks (Word/Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms and spaces.
• Maintain cleaning equipment and restock supplies.
• Ensure building security and assist with safety.
• Report maintenance issues and safety concerns.
• Assist with event setup, takedown, and furniture moves.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 3:30 PM – 11:30 PM

About The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and dependable Custodian to join our team and help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming school environment. As a custodian, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational mission of our school by ensuring our facilities are clean, secure, and well-maintained.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, restrooms, offices, and common areas
• Maintain cleaning equipment and restock supplies
• Ensure building security and assist with facility safety
• Report maintenance issues and safety concerns
• Support event setup and takedown, and assist with furniture moves
• Perform seasonal tasks such as snow shoveling and outdoor maintenance
• Conduct minor maintenance on building systems and furniture repairs
• Collaborate with staff and project a positive image of the school

What We're Looking For:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 6 months of custodial or building maintenance experience preferred
• Valid WHMIS certification
• Working knowledge of cleaning procedures, tools, and safety regulations
• Ability to operate custodial equipment (e.g., auto scrubbers, vacuums, floor burnishers)
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook)
• Strong organizational, communication, and people skills
• A demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively
• Physically capable of lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods
• The successful applicant will be required to provide a police information check with vulnerable sector as well as complete job specific pre-employment testing as a condition of the job offer.
