Job description

ERM is seeking an outstanding professional to join our Vancouver, BC, or Calgary, AB office as an Environmental Subject Matter Expert - Ecology to support our Mining and Energy teams.

As a member of the team, you will act as a technical leader in western Canada, with capacity to conduct work in other jurisdictions across Canada. Work will include technical aspects in support of ERM projects in the mining and energy sectors. Tasks include supporting and organizing projects and associated deliverables for the terrestrial biodiversity team (e.g., vegetation and wetland scopes of work), acting as a liaison between project management and technical teams, interacting with clients and subcontractors, and tracking schedules and budgets. Technical tasks include acting as a QP in your respective field (e.g., vegetation and wetland biology) to coordinate and support the execution of field-based programs from a primarily office-based position. The successful applicant will have direct exposure to construction projects, environmental assessments, and mitigation planning as it relates to implementation of federal and provincial policies. More broadly, the applicant must show an interest in applying knowledge and skills to help our clients solve complex challenges in these sectors. This role offers significant potential for career growth, including opportunities to interact directly with clients and regulators and participate in business development. The successful candidate will be part of a large multidisciplinary biodiversity and impact assessment team in Canada and will join an extensive team of global environmental and social experts.

This posting is designed for a motivated, career-minded individual who enjoys problem solving and working within a multi-stakeholder environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Support the management of relevant aspects of large and complex projects on time and within budget, including scope, delivery requirements, budgeting, resourcing, planning, coordinating work, and managing health, safety, and risk aspects.
  2. Support environmental impact assessment and regulatory permitting efforts (e.g., baseline studies, facility siting and routing studies, land use planning, mitigation) as a client point of contact and support an inter-disciplinary team during project execution, including during construction, commissioning, start-up, and operations.
  3. Coordinate field programs, including logistics (e.g., accommodations, travel) and resources (e.g., field personnel, equipment).
  4. Assist in preparing proposals, including scope development and cost estimates, and contribute to business development efforts with existing clients and new leads.
  5. Act as a Qualified Person (QP) in your relevant field to support field teams, assist in decision-making, and facilitate information sharing across ERM and client teams.
  6. Manage multiple projects within scope, budget, and schedule expectations, ensuring quality standards on all deliverables.
  7. Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide.
REQUIREMENTS:
  1. B.Sc. degree in Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related field; M.Sc. preferred.
  2. 10+ years of environmental consulting experience; experience in government, mining, or oil and gas sectors is advantageous.
  3. Knowledge of relevant subject matter and operational mitigation measures (e.g., construction, wildlife, vegetation management).
  4. Expertise with Federal, Provincial, and Territorial regulations and guidelines related to surveys, environmental assessments, and compliance.
  5. Relevant professional designation or immediate eligibility.
  6. Strong commitment to safety and adherence to health and safety protocols.
  7. Ability to lead, follow directions, and take initiative.
  8. Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  9. Proven people and project management skills.
  10. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding environment.
  11. Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

For the Sr. Ecologist position, the anticipated annual base pay ranges from $109,733 to $139,883 CAD, depending on various factors including education, experience, and location. Compensation outside this range may occur based on these factors. The role is also eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, parental leave, medical, dental, vision, life, disability, AD&D insurance, 401(k) or RRSP/DPSP, among others.

Applications can be submitted via ERM Careers or through the internal portal for current employees.
