Position Summary
Reporting to the Team Lead, Urban Response, the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) works in the Dynamic Overdose Response (DOR) Program, one of two programs within the Urban Response services in the Health & Recovery Services department. This program supports clients utilizing Emergency Shelter services that are in various stages of their housing and recovery journeys. The DOR Program provides emergency response and short-term medical observation to individuals who have recently experienced a medical emergency and require additional medical support or intervention.
The Primary Care Paramedic will perform tasks related to emergency response, applying various standard assessment tools, symptom management, wound care, documentation, health promotion, referrals to internal and external resources, mental health and crisis intervention and other tasks as assigned by the Team Lead.
Time Commitment
Being a member of the Primary Care Paramedic pool is vital to ensure staffing schedule requirements are met to achieve successful operations of all Health & Recovery Services programs. In order to remain a key member of the PCP Relief Pool, you must secure a minimum of 3 shifts per month. This includes planned and unplanned absences like shift coverage for vacation, sick-time and other absences. Relief staff are scheduled on an as needed basis and that may include day, afternoon and/or night shifts. Schedule may be altered at the discretion of management.

Working Conditions
The individuals we serve are experiencing homelessness or precarious housing and may also be facing substance use disorders and/or mental or physical health challenges. Many have a history of significant trauma. These experiences can influence their interactions with both staff and one another. By recognizing these behaviors as responses to past experiences, we are able to engage with our guests in a manner that is empathetic and respectful.
This role may involve high-stress situations that require resilience, compassion, and composure. At the DI we are deeply committed to the well-being of our staff, implementing policies and providing resources that support both physical and psychological safety, as well as mental health. We address the immediate challenges faced by our team to provide the highest level of support as well as the cumulative impacts of this vital work.
