Role Responsibilities

This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in protecting essential government services, communications networks, and public safety infrastructure across Alberta. Your expertise will ensure reliable power generation, operational readiness, and the long-term sustainability of critical Forestry Division assets, particularly in remote and extreme environments.

As the province's technical expert in power generation and specialized small-engine systems, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for a diverse portfolio of mechanical assets. This highly autonomous and mobile role combines hands‑on mechanical troubleshooting with long‑term asset management, contract oversight, and capital planning. When equipment failures threaten critical operations, you will be relied upon to diagnose issues, engineer practical solutions, and restore functionality quickly and safely. Your work will directly support the resilience, reliability, and cost‑effectiveness of Alberta's Forestry Division infrastructure.

Your key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting advanced diagnostics, overhauls, and repairs on diesel, LPG, natural gas, and gasoline generator systems.
• Responding to emergency power outages and restoring critical operations through expert troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis.
• Performing load bank testing, fuel system calibrations, inspections, and readiness assessments for provincial power generation assets.
• Evaluating and modifying generator systems to improve efficiency, reliability, and cold‑weather performance.
• Designing and implementing site‑specific operating procedures for equipment used in remote and extreme environments.
• Developing technical specifications, scopes of work, and maintenance requirements for outsourced mechanical contracts.
• Evaluating contractor proposals and monitoring vendor performance to ensure compliance with service‑level agreements and engineering standards.
• Reviewing contractor work and expenditures to ensure quality, accountability, and value for money.
• Fabricating custom components and mechanical solutions when replacement parts are unavailable or obsolete.
• Engineering temporary and permanent repairs to maintain critical operations during equipment failures.
• Modifying and adapting equipment to support non‑standard assets and unique operational requirements.
• Analyzing lifecycle and performance data to forecast replacement requirements and prevent future failures.
• Developing long‑term strategies for fleet modernization, equipment upgrades, and capital planning initiatives.
• Establishing preventative maintenance programs for generators, pumps, compressors, and specialized mechanical equipment.
• Training staff on routine inspections, operational checks, and preventive maintenance practices.
• Ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulations, environmental standards, engineering requirements, and provincial legislation.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard: Two-year technical diploma in heavy duty mechanic, power systems technician, gas compression technician or a related field plus six years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

• Experience with power generation systems supporting emergency services, communications infrastructure, forestry operations, or other critical public-sector facilities.
• Experience with welding, machining, fabrication, and custom mechanical design.
• Knowledge of lifecycle asset management, capital planning, and equipment replacement strategies.
• Familiarity with Alberta Building Code, electrical regulations, environmental requirements, and occupational health and safety standards.
• Experience working in remote or harsh environmental conditions and supporting critical infrastructure.

This permanent full-time position is based on a 36.25-hour work week, Monday to Friday. However, the nature of wildfire operations requires flexibility, and overtime, travel outside the home area, and extended work hours may be required with little or no notice in response to operational needs and wildfire activity.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).

Must be able to obtain a federal security clearance at a minimum of RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status (the “Security Clearance”) with the RCMP within 10 months of employment. This federal security clearance is initiated by the employer.
