Job summary

Intertek in Burnaby is seeking a Pollution and Safety Advisor to join the Caleb Brett team. You will work mainly independently at client sites, supervising ship loading and discharging operations to prevent pollution and ensure safety.

The role requires understanding tanker operations, compliance with legal and terminal procedures, and the ability to write clear technical reports for busy clients. Compensation includes a competitive hourly wage and comprehensive benefits.

Responsibilities

• Monitor client ships to promote safe, pollution-free operation and minimize port time
• Ensure ship-board personnel understand their roles and requirements
• Maintain effective ship-to-shore communication throughout supervised operations
• Oversee mooring/unmooring and ship anchoring as applicable
• Ensure voyage orders are understood and ship complies with laws and terminal policies
• Perform ship safety inspections and complete required documentation
• Carry out other duties related to the above as assigned

Pollution and Safety Advisor

Intertek is searching for an Pollution and Safety Advisor to join our Caleb Brett team in our Burnaby office. This is a fantastic opportunity to grow a versatile career in Maritime Safety and Inspection!

The Pollution and Safety Advisor is responsible for working mainly independently for clients at locations remote from the managing office, supervising ship loading and discharging operations at a terminal to provide pollution prevention, cargo expediting and safety advisory services, ensuring that such operations are carried out in compliance with the Intertek quality system, best industry practices, applicable law, and client requirements.

What You’ll Do

• Monitoring client ship(s) to promote safe and pollution free operation while minimizing port time by improving operational efficiency.
• Ensuring that all ship-board personnel involved in any supervised operations are fully aware of their role in, and the requirements of, such operations.
• Ensuring effective ship to shore communication channels are established and maintained throughout any supervised operation.
• Supervising mooring and unmooring operations and, where applicable, the ship’s anchoring arrangements and ensuring the ship’s arrangements comply at all times with applicable law and terminal procedures.
• Ensuring that all voyage orders are understood and observed and that the ship is familiar with and complies with applicable law, terminal regulations, and client policies;
• Carrying out ship safety inspections, and completing documentation, including ship and shore checklists as may be required by terminal personnel or the client.
• Other duties related to the above, as assigned

What It Takes To Be Successful In This Role

• At a minimum PSAs shall have a full understanding of tanker operations and shall hold or shall have held the Canadian maritime document or equivalent certificate of competency permitting the holder to serve in the rank of at least chief officer or first engineer on board ships of unlimited tonnage
• Shall have so served within no more than 10 years prior to being hired and/or
• Is currently accredited under the SIRE or CDI programs,
• Holds auditor status with the TMSA program,
• Has been a marine surveyor with governmental authorities or a surveyor with a classification society
• Actively engaged in a marine consultancy business providing similar services to oil, mining or shipping companies or port authorities or governmental bodies, has served as a marine or engineering superintendent for an oil, mining or shipping company.
• Able to write clear and concise reports – much of the information is technical but is being read by busy non technical clients, the PSA must be able to write reports that communicate the information clearly and economically.

Salary & Benefits Information

The hourly wage for this position is $44.51 per hour. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate including skill set, experience, qualifications, and other job-related reasons.
