Job description

Our client is a leading producer of frozen food products for retail and foodservice markets throughout Canada, the United States, and around the world. It has four state-of-the-art potato processing plants in PEI, Alberta, and in Jamestown, ND, and an appetizer plant in Wheatley, ON. Our Head office is in Dieppe, NB and sales office locations are in Toronto, Montreal, and Boston.

This position reports to the Director of Operations. The successful candidate will directly supervise the Production Managers. This position requires interaction with the Quality Assurance Department, Health and Safety Department, Maintenance Department, Finance Department, Shipping and Logistics Department, Human Resources Department, Field Department, Sales Department, union executive, and employees. Assume food safety responsibility in the absence of the Director of Operations.

Major Responsibilities :

  • Motivate employees to embrace the Leadership Values and behaviors.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to Shift Managers and Packaging Supervisors so that Standard Operating Procedures are understood and followed.
  • Foster and maintain a positive labour relations environment by ensuring that all employees are treated with respect, grievances are dealt with in a timely manner, and employees are communicated with in an open manner.
  • Assist the Director of Operations with developing a cohesive, competent management team and planning for capable management succession by effectively acquiring, developing, and motivating manufacturing personnel.
  • Monitor production inputs and outputs to minimize product loss.
  • Ensure all product orders are produced on time with no shortfall in quality or quantity.
  • Encourage the use of Six Sigma and Downtime Analysis to improve product quality and reduce the cost of production.
  • Participate in the review and recommendation for capital improvements for equipment and plant facilities.
  • Ensure plant compliance to Government regulations and Company specifications for HACCP, Sanitation, and Safety through supportive collaboration with the appropriate personnel.

Qualifications and Abilities :

  • Post-secondary education in one of the following disciplines : food science, business, engineering, or operations management.
  • 5 or more years of production experience in a food processing industry.
  • 3 or more years of experience in a management role within a unionized work environment.
  • Six Sigma training and experience would be an asset.
  • The successful candidate will be results-oriented, thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships with associates and employees.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proven decision-making ability using various analytical tools (variance reports, downtime analysis, SWOT analysis, Six Sigma metrics, etc.);
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage conflict and build teams;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Oracle;
  • A proven track record of being pro-active and taking initiative;
  • The flexibility to adapt to a 24-hour, 7-day operation schedule;
  • Knowledge of HACCP and Health and Safety regulations.
