Job summary

The City of Burnaby is seeking a Plan Checker 1 to review building plans and permit applications for single and two-family dwellings to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code and local regulations.

You will identify non-conforming items, discuss findings with project principals, and issue permits when compliant.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Building Technology or equivalent experience in building construction or municipal regulation.
• Knowledge of municipal bylaws and BC Building Code/regulations; standard practices and materials in building construction.
• Ability to interpret building construction plans rapidly and accurately; perform mathematical calculations; communicate orally and in writing; interact with contractors, designers and the public; use related software.
• Requires Building Officials’ Association of BC Level 1 Qualification, and registration as Building Official; valid BC Driver's Licence.

Responsibilities

• Check building plans and permit applications for single and two-family dwellings to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code, regulations, bylaws and requirements.
• List non-conforming items and discuss with principals involved; prepare and issue permits when regulations are satisfied.
• Perform routine drafting, record maintenance, filing of plans, and respond to enquiries regarding regulations and bylaws; provide information to inspectors and other municipal staff.
• Undertake special departmental projects as directed; perform related duties as required.

Job description

This position works in the Plan Checking organizational unit. This is technical and clerical work in checking building plans and permit applications relating to single and two-family dwellings for adherence to the BC Building Code, applicable regulations, municipal bylaws, and requirements. A Plan Checker 1 examines plans for proposed construction regulated under Part 9 of the BC Building Code, lists non-conforming items of submitted plans and discusses them with principals involved, prepares and issues building permits when applicable regulations are satisfied. Duties also involve routine drafting and correspondence assignments, record maintenance, filing plans, answering enquiries concerning regulations and bylaws, providing information for inspectors and other municipal employees concerning buildings under construction, and carrying out special departmental projects as directed. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include graduation from an Institute of Technology with a diploma in Building Technology, plus some related experience in the building construction industry or municipal regulatory work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of municipal bylaws and provincial building code and regulations; the standard practices and materials employed in building construction; the preparation and use of building plans and specifications. Ability to interpret building construction plans rapidly and accurately; perform mathematical calculations; understand and execute oral and written instructions and to deal tactfully and effectively with contractors, architects/engineers and the general public; prepare routine correspondence and reports; use related software applications. A Building Officials’ Association of British Columbia Level 1 Qualification, registration as a Building Official and a valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia are required.
