Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous quality and safety improvement is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, and working independently within the interdisciplinary Seniors Health program, the Seniors Health physiotherapist supports prevention, assessment, and treatment of injuries, pain, diseases, and disorders affecting movement, function, and health status of clients, primarily over 75 with cognitive impairment or frailty indicators. Contributing to the program's interdisciplinary comprehensive geriatric screening and assessment, the physiotherapist will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of function and mobility, providing team leadership to promote and maintain seniors' mobility, health, and well-being.
  2. Review information related to clients' prior functional abilities, physical performance, and participation.
  3. Conduct assessments including joint integrity, mobility, gait, balance, muscle performance, motor and neuromotor functions, cardiorespiratory health, pain, cognition, skin condition, and environmental factors.
  4. Identify personal and environmental factors impacting clients' abilities and participation.
  5. Deliver physiotherapy services in a safe environment, ensuring safety for clients and staff.
  6. Perform interventions such as therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, electro-physical agents, activity training, and device prescriptions, in accordance with client consent and safety protocols.
  7. Determine supervision needs and monitor interventions appropriately.
  8. Educate clients on health promotion, self-management, and available services tailored to their conditions.
Qualifications: Education, Training, And Experience

Graduation from a recognized university physiotherapy program, current licensure with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC, eligibility for CPA membership, knowledge of BC physiotherapy standards, and experience with the frail elderly population or equivalent. A valid BC Driver's License is required.
