Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The Physician Assistant (PA), Emergency, performs clinical duties under the guidance of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC). Clinical care occurs at Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH) under the supervision of a PA Emergency Program Physician Supervisor. The PA reports to a Site Administrative Manager but is accountable to the Physician Supervisor or delegate for quality of care and professional development. The PA collaborates with ED physicians, medical residents, nursing, and allied health professionals to provide continuous care in a team-based environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Registration as a Physician Assistant with the CPSBC (https://www.cpsbc.ca/registrants/current-registrants/registration-and-licensing/physician-assistant).
  • Two years' recent emergency department experience preferred but not essential.
  • Proof of compliance with continuing professional development requirements of the PACCC or NCCPA, satisfactory to the CPSBC.
  • Maintain Physician Assistant licensure with CPSBC throughout employment.
  • Meet CPSBC's English language proficiency requirements.
  • Legally eligible to work in British Columbia (Canadian Citizenship, permanent resident, or other legal status).
  • Maintain Island Health educational and training requirements.
  • Maintain professional liability insurance during employment.

Mandatory Certifications (to be completed prior to starting)

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); equivalent certifications considered.

Preferred Qualifications (may be attained after hire)

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Independent Practitioner Status for FAST Point of Care Ultrasound.
  • AIME Course within the past four years.
  • CASTED Course.
Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient in English communication with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Effective computer and documentation skills, including order entry.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and under supervision.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands professionally.
  • Physical ability for duties, including evening and overnight shifts.
  • Effective communication and relationship-building with health professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team productivity.
  • Ability to document per CPSBC and organizational standards.

Assessment and Probationary Period:

A 12-week probationary period will involve assessment and evaluation of competency under supervision. Continued employment depends on satisfactory completion of this period and ongoing reviews.
