The Physical Plant (Brampton Facilities) Lead & Project Coordinator provides support and coordination, under the direction of the Manager, Brampton Projects and Facilities, on work duties including maintenance, repairs, and custodial. The incumbent will be responsible for working closely with contractors to ensure the safe and timely completion of all related construction and maintenance projects in the Greater Toronto Area campuses. In addition, they will provide support to capital and renovation projects, including the coordination of repairs for all building and infrastructure electronic and mechanical control systems across campus, and liaise with Engineers and Architects, when required. The incumbent will provide hands-on maintenance and repairs of all campus equipment, machinery, and facilities.
Responsibilities
- Physical Plant (Brampton Facilities) Lead (35%)
- Prioritize and delegate the work of all Brampton facilities staff and student employees as determined through departmental workflow requirements and via requests through the electronic ticket system. This work must be prioritized and delegated as urgency and availability are best determined.
- Meet regularly with the Manager to provide status updates and receive direction and/or provide updates on or recommendations for projects and initiatives on campus.
- Arrange for staff training as needed and under the direction of the Manager.
- Routinely monitor all interior and exterior areas of the campus to maintain a safe campus environment.
- Ensure proper WHMIS documentation is maintained and monitor all materials and handling for the Plant Department under the direction of the Manager.
- Act as a resource to the Joint Health and Safety Committee as required.
- Monitor all Brampton facilities' inventories and equipment.
- Look after all filing and ensure accurate documentation is in place for all building drawings, as-built drawings, and mechanical manuals.
- Project Coordination (30%)
- Take a lead role in plant maintenance and equipment replacement projects on campus, overseeing schedule, milestones, budget, quality, scope, and risks.
- Coordinate and liaise with contractors, service providers, and consultants on projects.
- Liaise with Engineers, contractors, and Architects as required, providing direction and driving to project completion, raising risks, delays, or budget challenges to the Manager for resolution.
- Represent Algoma University at assigned project construction site meetings and provide input and advice when required.
- Act as a project coordinator for small to mid-sized renovations on campus.
- Maintenance & Preventative Maintenance (30%)
- Assist the Manager, Brampton Projects and Facilities , and the Manager, Life Safety and Security, in emergency situations as required.
- Recommend and coordinate the regular and preventative maintenance of all campus equipment (e.g. filters, pumps, motors, central power, utilities, and cabling).
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and schedule testing and logging of Building Management Systems (e.g. HVAC, vacuum, compressed air, generator, fire suppression, fire detection, security, growth chamber).
- Coordinate and oversee repairs, installations, and maintenance of Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E), building components, tools, and groundskeeping (e.g. wall, ceiling, and floor finishes; roofing and roofing substrates; plumbing, electrical and lighting fixtures; keyed entry systems; shop tools and equipment as required; lawn and garden care; snow removal).
- Coordinate and oversee shop-related and on-site skilled trade work in carpentry, mechanical, electrical, or plumbing projects and provide guidance where necessary.
- Coordinate and plan maintenance and/or energy efficiencies on plant equipment and facilities.
- Assist with installing and maintaining various ITS systems (e.g. surveillance, access control, parking systems, and audiovisual equipment).
- Other Duties (5%)
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Brampton Projects & Facilities.

Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in a coordinator/team lead position in a similar facility/maintenance environment, and a relevant trade and/or certificate from either Carpentry, Electrical, or Mechanical Trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
- Working knowledge of applicable codes (e.g. Ontario Building Code, CSA B149, etc.).
- Specific technical/manual/job-specific skills required:
- Demonstrated skills in plant repairs and maintenance, and the ability to perform these duties independently with operational effectiveness.
- Experience in managing facilities systems in areas of mechanical, electrical, and alarms.
- Comprehension of mechanical requirements for facilities and equipment, including the ability to read technical drawings and schematics.
- Must have experience in new construction and renovations.
- Computer proficiency in building management software (e.g. IVue, Fireworks, Simple Five, etc.).
- Experience with budgeting, purchasing, and materials handling.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and work under pressure in a dynamic environment, particularly in emergency situations.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Understanding of, and ability to uphold, confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to represent the University professionally in interactions with internal and external partners/communities.
- Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, styles, and abilities.
- Innovative problem-solver.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Vulnerable Sector check is required.
Salary Scale
$79,153 to $98,941 annually
