Job description

Personal Support Worker - East Garafraxa, ON - CAD$243.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 79-year-old woman living in East Garafraxa (12 minutes from Fergus). She manages rheumatoid arthritis and organizing pneumonia, which cause fluctuating health needs. She uses a walker and oxygen full-time, though she can move around with a cane at home when resting. While she handles showering and feeding independently, her arthritis and lung condition significantly impact her functional abilities day-to-day and week-to-week. She lives with her husband who works 60+ hours weekly, making consistent support essential. Cognitively she's doing well and values her independence, but truly benefits from having someone alongside her for both practical help and companionship.

Responsibilities:

This role focuses on adjacent support and companionship rather than hands-on personal care. You'll help with tasks like preparing tea, warming up pre-made meals, handing items to her, assisting with getting things in and out of the car, and accompanying her to doctor's appointments (either driving her car or helping her through doors and navigating appointments). Light tidying is appreciated, though a separate cleaning service handles housekeeping. The social aspect is equally important—previous caregivers have gone to aquafit classes, run errands, organized closets together, and simply provided engaging company. This companionship has made a remarkable difference in her mood, cognitive engagement, and willingness to get out into the world.

What We're Looking For:

We need someone calm and patient who makes her feel comfortable and respected. Reliability and consistency are crucial—she thrives with the same caregiver on a regular schedule. Someone who takes initiative, recognizes when she needs help versus when she wants independence, and brings positive energy will be the right fit. Experience with mobility assistance (walker/wheelchair) is important, as is comfort providing transportation. English-speaking required. The ideal caregiver understands that needs fluctuate—some days she'll need more hands-on help, other days she'll want to do things herself with you nearby for support.

Schedule:

We're looking for 3 visits per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday preferred, though flexible), approximately 3 hours per visit. Shifts typically run 9:00 AM–12:00 PM or 10:00 AM–1:00 PM, as she takes time getting going in the morning and usually needs rest after activities. Some schedule flexibility week-to-week is appreciated as her health fluctuates, particularly as her pneumonia tends to flare in fall/winter months.

Additional Considerations

Client uses walker and oxygen full-time due to rheumatoid arthritis and organizing pneumonia. Health fluctuates day-to-day and week-to-week. Client values independence but needs adjacent support - some days requires full assistance with meal prep and warming food, other days just needs items handed to her or help putting things in car. Caregiver should be comfortable with client's varying needs based on arthritis flare-ups and pneumonia symptoms. Client is cognitively well and enjoys social interaction. Previous caregiver relationship was very positive - they went to Aquafit together, ran errands, cleaned out closets, and provided companionship. Social engagement is crucial as it improves client's mood and cognitive function. Client is more eager to get out when she has someone to accompany her. Father lives in home but works 60 hours per week. Cleaning service already in place - no heavy housekeeping required. Meal prep is minimal, mostly reheating prepared meals. Client may drive herself on good days but needs driver support on difficult days - caregiver would use client's vehicle. Medical appointments may require accompaniment for door assistance and support.
