Job summary

Grande Prairie Police Service is accepting applications for Community Peace Officer roles. Officers will enforce City bylaws, provincial statutes and federal laws while patrolling city areas, engaging with the public, and providing education on safety.

Ideal candidates possess a law enforcement diploma, a valid Alberta Class 5 license, and First Aid certification, with the ability to obtain required security clearances.

Qualifications

• Diploma in law enforcement/social sciences or equivalent training/experience.
• Valid Alberta Driver’s license – Class 5 with no more than 6 demerits.
• High School Diploma required.
• Must be comfortable with electronic hardware and software use.
• Proven ability to tactfully handle confrontational situations.
• PARE certificate or equivalent.
• Current First Aid Certificate.
• Must obtain and maintain security clearance.
• Must be eligible for City bylaw officer appointment and Alberta Security Guard License depending on assignment.
• Specialized training assets (Emergency Vehicle Operation, Collision investigation Level II, Radar/Laser, CVSA, TDG, Animal Control, W&D) are assets.
• Certified completion of CPOIP or equivalent is an asset.
• Must obtain Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment.

Responsibilities

• Provide education, investigation and enforcement of City Bylaws, Provincial Statutes and Federal Laws, including evidence collection and court testimony.
• Complete proactive patrols (foot, bicycle, vehicle) to deter infractions and assist the public.
• Perform Traffic Safety activities including traffic control and collision investigation.
• Engage with the community through education, workshops, bike rodeos and BBQs.
• Conduct Animal Control activities such as licensing checks and welfare investigations.
• Support Grande Prairie Police Service and partner agencies as required.
• Ensure excellent customer service and de-escalate confrontational situations.
• Duties performed in accordance with department policies and statutes.
• Perform other departmental duties as directed.

Peace Officers provide a uniformed, community-based presence; maintaining social order, keeping the peace, enforcing Municipal, Provincial and Federal laws (where authorized), attending court, preventing crime, addressing matters of public safety, and responding to the needs of the community, city-wide through proactive patrols and dispatched calls.

Responsibilities

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide education, investigation and enforcement of specific City Bylaws, Provincial Statutes and Federal Laws. This will involve the collection of evidence, completion of reports, and providing court/adjudicator testimony.
• Complete proactive foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of assigned areas within the City to deter negative behaviours, identify infractions or safety concerns, and assist the public when required.
• Perform Traffic Safety activities such as traffic control, collision investigation, and both moving/non-moving traffic enforcement.
• Participate in community engagement activities on behalf of the Department that include providing education, workshops, bike rodeos, and BBQs.
• Conduct Animal Control such as collecting animals running at large, licensing checks, welfare investigations, and responding to animal attacks.
• Assisting the Grande Prairie Police Service and other partner agencies/departments as required and within authorized authorities.
• Ensure excellent customer service through the course of their duties and tactfully resolve confrontational situations.
• All duties will be conducted in accordance with department policies and procedures, Bylaw C-829, and all applicable Provincial and Federal Statutes.
• Will perform other departmental duties as directed by the Enforcement Services Manager or their designate.

You Bring

Required Qualifications

• Diploma in law enforcement/social sciences (or similar) from a recognized institution or an equivalent level of training and experience.
• Valid Alberta Driver’s license – Class 5 (or equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits.
• High School Diploma required.
• Must be comfortable and proficient with electronic hardware (laptops, smartphones) and the use of software (email, mobile applications, word processing).
• Proven ability to tactfully handle and resolve confrontational situations.
• Valid Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) certificate or equivalent.
• Current Standard First Aid Certificate.
• Must obtain and maintain a security clearance (Enhanced Reliability Status or higher).
• Must be eligible to maintain a City of Grande Prairie Bylaw Officer Appointment and eligible to obtain/maintain an Alberta Security Guard License depending on assignment.
• Specialized training in Emergency Vehicle Operation, Collision investigation Level II, Radar/Laser, C.V.S.A., Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Animal Control and Weights and Dimensions is an asset.
• Successful completion of approved Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) or an equivalent is an asset.
• Must obtain and maintain an appointment as a Community Peace Officer (Level 1).

Hours

The standard workweek consists of an average of 40 hours. The weekly schedule will encompass shifts that include days, evenings, and weekends.

Compensation

Starting Salary is $46.13 per hour as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
