Job summary

Alberta Blue Cross is seeking a Payroll Specialist to join our Payroll and Human Resources team. You will manage end-to-end bi-weekly payroll for employees across Alberta, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely payments.

The role requires a post-secondary diploma and a minimum of 3 years of payroll experience, with PCP designation preferred. Workday Payroll experience and pension knowledge are assets, and confidentiality is essential.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Accounting, HR, Payroll Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive payroll experience with knowledge of payroll legislation and statutory reporting.
  • Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation preferred or in progress.
  • Experience with Workday Payroll (reporting, data validation, testing) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) is an asset.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end processing of bi-weekly payroll, including data entry, validation, calculations, balancing, and payments.
  • Prepare payroll reconciliations, statutory filings, working papers, and supporting documentation for regulatory and external audits.
  • Ensure payroll activities comply with legislation, policies, controls, and reporting.
  • Serve as main contact for payroll inquiries and support across the organization.
  • Provide Workday Payroll support, reporting, data validation, testing, and upgrades.
  • Administer pension-related payroll activities, including deductions, contributions, and remittances.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes through automation and optimization.

In this role, you will play a critical part in delivering an accurate, timely, and seamless payroll experience for employees across Alberta Blue Cross. You will coordinate payroll preparation activities, maintain and optimize payroll systems, and provide expert support to ensure compliance, operational excellence, and a positive employee experience.WHAT YOU WILL DO:Manage the end-to-end processing of bi-weekly payroll, including data entry, validation, calculations, balancing, transmission, and the administration of employee-related payments such as terminations, retirements, and leaves of absence.Prepare payroll reconciliations, statutory filings, working papers, and supporting documentation for regulatory reporting, financial reporting, and internal and external audit requirements.Ensure payroll activities are completed in compliance with applicable legislation, company policies, internal controls, and reporting requirements.Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries, providing support and guidance to employees, leaders, and Human Resources.Provide support for the Workday Payroll including reporting, data validation, testing, upgrades, and the implementation of system enhancements and new functionality.Administer pension-related payroll activities, ensuring the accuracy of deductions, contributions, earnings, service reporting, adjustments, and related remittances.Identify and implement opportunities to improve payroll processes through automation, workflow enhancements, system optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records while supporting cross-training, special projects, and other team priorities as required.WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:Completion of a post-secondary diploma in Business Administration, Accounting, Human Resources, Payroll Administration, or a related field.Minimum 3 years of progressive payroll experience, supported by strong knowledge of payroll legislation, employment standards, taxable benefits, and statutory reporting requirements.Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation, or progress toward completion, is preferred.Experience with Workday Payroll, including reporting, testing, data validation, and system support, is an asset.Knowledge of pension administration, including the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP), is considered an asset.Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, coupled with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across the organization.Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive employee and organizational information.This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected.Alberta Blue Cross is an inclusive employer committed to a workplace that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
