Job summary

The City of Coquitlam is seeking a Temporary Full-Time Payroll Clerk to manage bi-weekly payroll for a defined portfolio from hire to retirement. You will verify time submissions, process WorkSafeBC payments, issue ROEs, and handle payroll remittances and reconciliations with accuracy.

Ideal candidates bring three years of payroll experience, PCC/PCP credentials, and strong MS Excel/Word skills. The role offers a competitive hourly rate in a collaborative municipal environment in Coquitlam.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by PCC program courses.
  • Payroll experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and payroll systems is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, calculate, and complete moderately complex bi-weekly payroll for all employees in your portfolio from hire to retire.
  • Verify submitted time for accuracy and compliance with the Collective Agreement.
  • Process WorkSafeBC payments and issue Records of Employment.
  • Prepare remittances and manual cheques.
  • Perform payroll reconciliations.
  • Respond to payroll-related inquiries.
  • Maintain communication with internal and external contacts on payroll matters.

About You / What We Are Looking For

We are currently seeking a Temporary Full-Time (TFT) organized and committed payroll professionals to join our team as Payroll Clerks. Don’t be misled by the term “Clerk”—this position carries a high level of responsibility.

As part of the payroll team, you will work with individuals at all levels of the organization to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance in payroll processes. You will manage a departmental portfolio, supporting all aspects of the payroll experience for assigned employees, and building effective working relationships with those you support.

As a Payroll Clerk, your duties include:
  • Preparation, calculation, and completion of moderately complex bi-weekly payroll for all employees within your portfolio, from hire to retire
  • Verifying submitted time for accuracy and compliance with the Collective Agreement
  • Processing WorkSafeBC payments and issuing Records of Employment
  • Preparing remittances and manual cheques
  • Performing payroll reconciliations
  • Responding to payroll-related inquiries
  • Maintaining communication with various internal and external contacts on a wide range of payroll matters

While most of your work will be performed independently, our payroll department is highly team-oriented, providing opportunities to collaborate, share expertise with your peers, and learn from one another.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by two or more courses from the Payroll Compliance Certification (PCC) program of the Payroll Management Association of Canada
  • Payroll experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Preferred Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of payroll experience, supplemented by the Payroll Compliance Practitioner certification or completion of payroll coursework through an accredited association. Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook is required.

Experience with PeopleSoft and Maximo, as well as any background in municipal or regional government environments, is considered an asset.

What We Offer:

This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $34.25 - $40.23 (2026 rates) plus 6% in lieu of benefits. The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
