Title: Payroll & Benefits Specialist

Combined Metal Industries (CMI for short!) sources and processes recycled ferrous and non-ferrous metals across North America and ensure they do not end up in a landfill or go to waste. Our recycling stream ensures that all the ferrous and non-ferrous metals that enter our yards will create something new again!

Job Summary

Based in the North GTA, the Payroll and Benefits Specialist will manage the full-cycle payroll process and benefits administration. This role ensures accurate and timely payroll, compliance with tax regulations, and financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Payroll Processing & Compliance:
  • Process bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure income tax compliance, including deductions, remittances, and year-end reporting.
  • Process T4s, Records of Employment (ROEs), and WSIB & EI submissions.
  • Manage garnishments, wage deductions, and statutory compliance reporting.
  • Ensure accurate tracking of hours worked, overtime, and leave balances.
  • Audit and reconcile payroll records to detect and resolve discrepancies.
  • Payroll & Benefits Support:
    • Maintain and update employee benefits enrollment and changes.
    • Address payroll-related employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, and benefits.
    • Process termination pay, severance, and outstanding vacation balances.
    • Prepare and reconcile payroll journal entries and upload data to the accounting system.
    • Manage RRSP contributions, general ledger (GL) entries, and accruals.
    • Support quarterly and annual audits with payroll and benefits documentation.

    Qualifications:

    • 5+ years of payroll processing and benefits administration experience.
    • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance or related field. Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification preferred.
    • Experience with HRIS/payroll systems.
    • Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations, compliance, and financial reporting.
    • Intermediate Excel skills, including formulas, pivot tables, and data validation.
    • Understanding of accounting principles, monthly accruals, and general ledger reconciliation.
    • Detail-oriented, problem-solving skills, and strong communication skills to support a high performing team culture.
