Job summary

MBM Intellectual Property Law LLP is seeking a Patent Agent to join a collaborative, growing team protecting innovations in Canada and worldwide.

The candidate will draft and prosecute patent applications, respond to Office Actions, and manage deadlines while mentoring junior agents and supporting client needs in a dynamic IP practice.

Qualifications

• Licensed CPATA Canadian Patent Agent.
• 8+ years drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
• Advanced degree in Electrical/Mechanical/Computer Engineering (JD not required).
• Experience with AI, cloud computing, and telecom tech.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Bilingual French/English an asset.

Responsibilities

• Meet with inventors to identify points of novelty.
• Draft foreign and domestic patent applications.
• Respond to Office Actions in Canada and abroad.
• Monitor deadlines related to client IP portfolios.
• Foster relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Mentor and support development of junior patent agents.

MBM Intellectual Property Law is looking for a Patent Agent to join our collaborative, growing team and help clients protect innovations in Canada and around the world.

The Opportunity

• Meeting with inventors to identify their invention's points of novelty
• Drafting foreign and domestic patent applications to articulate the above in writing
• Responding to both foreign and domestic Office Actions
• Monitoring deadlines/activities related to client IP portfolios
• Fostering and maintaining positive client and colleague relationships
• Mentoring, training, and supporting the development of junior patent agents in training
• Supporting team priorities and client needs as they arise

What You Will Bring

• A Class 1 license with the CPATA as a Registered Canadian Patent Agent (having passed USPTO Patent Bar would also be an asset)
• 8+ years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in both Canadian and foreign jurisdictions
• An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and/or Physics; a J.D. or other applicable law degree is not required
• An understanding of and experience with AI, cloud computing and telecommunications technologies
• The ability to meet and manage deadlines
• The ability to analyze complex problems and devise creative solutions
• Excellent communication skills, especially in writing
• Bilingualism in French and English would be an asset

Compensation and Hiring Transparency

Compensation will be competitive and aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibility. Salary range $130,000 to $175,000.
