Job summary

MBM Intellectual Property Law LLP in Ottawa seeks a registered Canadian Trademark Agent to join our trademark practice, managing portfolios and filing before CIPO.

You will advise on clearance, prosecution, renewals, and brand protection, coordinate with clients and foreign associates, and mentor junior staff. U.S. or international matters are welcome; bilingual English/French is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Registration as a Canadian Trademark Agent in good standing.
  • Approximately 5+ years of trademark prosecution and portfolio management experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of CIPO practices and trademark prosecution strategy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, ability to translate legal issues to clients.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple matters.
  • Collaborative, service-minded approach and sound business judgment.
  • Post-secondary education; a legal degree or equivalent qualification is an asset.
  • Experience with U.S. or foreign trademark matters is an asset.
  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, file, prosecute, and manage Canadian trademark applications before CIPO.
  • Advise clients on trademark clearance, filing, prosecution, portfolio management, renewals, and brand protection strategy.
  • Draft responses to Examiner’s Reports and communicate recommendations to clients.
  • Coordinate with clients, foreign associates, and agents on Canadian and international trademark matters.
  • Support opposition, expungement, and contentious matters with senior agents and lawyers.
  • Manage deadlines, maintain portfolio records, and ensure exceptional client service.
  • Build strong client relationships with practical business-minded advice.
  • Contribute to mentoring and knowledge sharing within the trademark team.

The Opportunity

What You Bring
  • Registration as a Canadian Trademark Agent in good standing.
  • Approximately 5+ years of trademark prosecution and portfolio management experience.

Compensation And Hiring Transparency

Compensation will be competitive and aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibility. Salary range $90,000 to $110,000.
