Job summary

Town of Ajax is seeking a Dance Instructor for Hip Hop to plan and run an 8-12 week program for children aged 6–13. You will lead engaging, safe classes, adapt to skill levels, and manage equipment with supervision from the Community Recreation Coordinator.

Qualifications include at least 1 year teaching Hip Hop, 2–3 years of advanced dance experience, First Aid/CPR-C, HIGH FIVE certification, and a clear CRC.

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching/coaching Hip Hop Dance and/or leadership experience.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of advanced skills/experience relevant to the activity.
  • Knowledge and experience delivering recreation programs and services.
  • Experience working with various age groups in a recreational setting.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR C certification.
  • HIGH FIVE® - Principles of Healthy Child Development.
  • Clear Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Search) within six months prior to hire.
  • Available to work days, afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements an 8-12 week Hip Hop Dance program for ages 6–13.
  • Leads groups and ensures safety and well-being of participants.
  • Provides individualized guidance to help mastery of skills.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies in safe condition.
  • Handles incidents and emergencies per departmental policies.
  • Completes attendance sheets weekly and submits to supervisor.
  • Assists in developing inclusive programs with supervision.
  • Creates a positive and inclusive program experience.
  • Encourages full participation and skill development.
  • Maintains communication with participants and the Community Recreation Coordinator.
  • Prepares the class before participants arrive and cleans after the session.
  • Ensures safety and well-being of the class at all times.
  • Follows Town of Ajax policies and acts professionally.
  • Supports public relations and solves problems as needed.
  • Performs administrative tasks to support the program.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Community Recreation Coordinator, the Program Instructor is accountable for planning and implementation of a safe and enjoyable beginner to intermediate program, teaching the fundamentals of the specified sport, art, dance, general interest, Leadership, etc.

Job Duties
  • Develops and implements a safe and enjoyable 8-12 week Hip Hop Dance Program for children ages 6 to 13, under the supervision of the Community Recreation Coordinator. Current program requirements are for Hip Hop Dance (Other genres welcomed)
  • Leads groups of program participants and ensures the safety and well-being of your assigned class.
  • Provides an individualized approach that assists with the mastery of skills and development within the program.
  • Ensures that the necessary equipment and supplies are available, and that such equipment and supplies are maintained in a safe condition.
  • Takes appropriate action to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies, as outlined in the departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that the attendance sheets are completed accurately every week and submitted to the appropriate supervisor at the end of each session.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of special needs programming in conjunction with supervisor.
  • Creates an environment that fosters a positive and inclusive program experience.
  • Creates an environment where participants strive to participate fully, perform the best of their ability, and learn new skills.
  • Works cooperatively and maintains ongoing and effective communication with participants, and the Community Recreation Coordinator.
  • Ensures the class is prepared before the participants arrive and that it is clean after the students leave.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of your assigned class.
  • Abides by the Town of Ajax policies and acts in a professional manner at all times.
  • Ensures effective public relations, and problem solves as necessary.
  • Performs administrative tasks necessary to support the program.
Qualifications/Skills
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age or older.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching/coaching Hip Hop Dance and/or leadership skills and a combination of training, education, and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of advanced skills/experience relevant to the activity being taught, acquired through multiple years of participation and lessons.
  • Knowledge and experience related to the delivery of recreation programs and services.
  • Experience working with various age groups in a recreational setting.
  • Current Standard First Aid certification with CPR C certification.
  • HIGH FIVE ® - Principles of Healthy Child Development.
  • Able to provide a clear Criminal Reference Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) that is current (completed within the last six months), upon being hired.
  • Must be available to work a variety of shifts including days, afternoons, evenings and weekends.
What is Offered to Staff

  • Hours of Work: Up to 24 hours per week.
  • Hours of work are Sunday to Saturday, various shifts between 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. (Current program needs are for Wednesdays at the McLean Community Centre from 6:15 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.)
