Job summary

The Alberta Teachers’ Association invites applications for an Editor (0.4 FTE), a temporary part-time position for one year. Reporting to the supervising editor, the editor ensures professional and credible internal and external communications.

You will edit a range of publications, perform editing tasks per ATA style guides, fact-check and coordinate with designers to prepare layouts, proofs and final copies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or a related field.
  • Three years of editing and research experience in a professional setting.
  • Experience in fact-checking and performing other research.
  • Experience with structural, stylistic and copy editing, and proofreading.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling and style guides; ability to edit in French is an asset.
  • Familiarity with academic language and writing conventions.
  • Basic knowledge of copyright and privacy legislation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with ability to see the big picture.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Performing substantive editing, line editing and copy editing per ATA style guides.
  • Editing, reviewing, proofreading and preparing materials for audience and purpose.
  • Receiving files, prioritizing, organizing materials and meeting deadlines.
  • Communicating with stakeholders about editing assignments.
  • Undertaking fact-checking and research to ensure accuracy.
  • Checking visual elements for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Identifying copyright, plagiarism, biased language, privacy issues or promotional material.
  • Facilitating design of ATA documents by liaising with designers on layout and formatting.
  • Preparing copy and electronic files for layout and proofs.
  • Proofreading galleys and verifying corrections.
  • Approving page proofs before printing.
  • Updating reference materials and ATA style guide as needed.
  • Recommending changes to ATA style guide.
