The Assistant Cook is responsible for assisting the Cook in the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and/or oversee the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees.
- Review menus and production sheets before preparing meals and ensure they are served properly and attractively.
- Ensure proper food handling techniques are followed.
- Complete daily temperature audits for fridge, freezers, and storerooms, recording findings on the daily audit form.
- Prepare and serve foods for therapeutic and specialty diets according to planned menus.
- Assist in serving meals, following residents' diet and food preferences using proper portion sizes.
- Make menu substitutions as necessary and record these appropriately.
- Follow daily production charts, standardized recipes, and daily menus within the set budget.
- Assist in receiving and storing incoming food and supplies.
- Participate in planning and preparing special occasion and theme meal days.
- Attend department and staff meetings, in-services, and training sessions.
- Respect and promote Resident Rights & Responsibilities.
- Participate in the Quality Improvement Program.
- Follow health and safety legislation and departmental procedures.
- Work responsibly with vulnerable adults (residents).
- Uphold the organization’s values related to ethics, morality, and integrity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must possess a Food Handler's Certificate.
- Red Seal Certificate preferred.
- Experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement settings.
- Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises Regulation and Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
- Experience with special and therapeutic diets.
- Physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for most of the shift.
- Proficiency in a second language is an asset.
- Must provide a current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check or be willing to obtain one.
