The Assistant Cook is responsible for assisting the Cook in the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Prepare and/or oversee the preparation and delivery of all foods for residents, guests, and employees.
  2. Review menus and production sheets before preparing meals and ensure they are served properly and attractively.
  3. Ensure proper food handling techniques are followed.
  4. Complete daily temperature audits for fridge, freezers, and storerooms, recording findings on the daily audit form.
  5. Prepare and serve foods for therapeutic and specialty diets according to planned menus.
  6. Assist in serving meals, following residents' diet and food preferences using proper portion sizes.
  7. Make menu substitutions as necessary and record these appropriately.
  8. Follow daily production charts, standardized recipes, and daily menus within the set budget.
  9. Assist in receiving and storing incoming food and supplies.
  10. Participate in planning and preparing special occasion and theme meal days.
  11. Attend department and staff meetings, in-services, and training sessions.
  12. Respect and promote Resident Rights & Responsibilities.
  13. Participate in the Quality Improvement Program.
  14. Follow health and safety legislation and departmental procedures.
  15. Work responsibly with vulnerable adults (residents).
  16. Uphold the organization’s values related to ethics, morality, and integrity.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Must possess a Food Handler's Certificate.
  2. Red Seal Certificate preferred.
  3. Experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement settings.
  4. Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises Regulation and Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
  5. Experience with special and therapeutic diets.
  6. Physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for most of the shift.
  7. Proficiency in a second language is an asset.
  8. Must provide a current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check or be willing to obtain one.
