Job summary

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a Maintenance/Facilities worker to assist in the construction and upkeep of CGS facilities and property assigned to Parks Services. Under supervision, you will perform a variety of building, grounds and construction tasks and may supervise small crews.

Requirements include 3 years of parks maintenance experience, reading plans/blueprints, and strong English communication. A valid driver’s licence and ability to operate CGS vehicles may be required.

Qualifications

• Secondary school education completed (Grade XII).
• 3 years of parks building and facilities maintenance experience.
• Ability to read and interpret basic plans and blueprints.
• Excellent use of English in speaking and writing.
• Valid driver's licence with acceptable driving record; may be required to use a CGS vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Construct and maintain facilities and properties within Parks and Recreation Services.
• Perform general maintenance of buildings, grounds and related construction tasks.
• Oversee small work crews on routine duties.
• Complete basic plumbing and lock/door repairs.
• Conduct safety inspections of buildings, fire safety equipment, playgrounds and outdoor amenities.

Main Function: Assist in the maintenance and construction of CGS facilities and property assigned to Parks Services.

Characteristic: Under the supervision of Superintendent of Parks or Designate.

Duties:
1. Construct and maintain buildings, facilities and properties within Parks and Recreation Services.
2. Act as a general maintenanceperson in performing a variety of duties connected with building maintenance, repair, grounds and construction.
3. Oversee small work crews in the performance of routine duties.
4. Complete basic plumbing.
5. Complete lock or door hardware repairs.
6. Conduct safety inspections including building, fire, playground and other outdoor recreational amenities, and ensure that corrective measures are implemented.
7. Perform the function of Parks Utility person as required.
8. Assist with the delivery and set-up of special events and functions.
9. Repair and maintain building, bridges, partitions, fencing, stairways, walls, counters, fixtures, rink boards, benches, bleachers, playground structures and form/construct concrete structures.
10. Report conditions of Parks and Facilities to Superintendent when damage or vandalism is observed.
11. Assist in the construction of new facilities or modification/repairs to existing structures.
12. Operate power and hand tools.
13. Participate in the maintenance on-call rotation for Parks Services.
14. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS’s Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
15. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

• Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.

Experience:

• Three (3) years experience in parks building and facilities maintenance, including a working knowledge of all tools, equipment and materials used in building and facility maintenance.

Other Requirements:

• Ability to work without direct supervision on many occasions.
• Ability to read and interpret basic plans and blueprints.
• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
• May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.
