Job description

Jump Recruitment, on behalf of our client, Newfoundland & Labrador Sports Centre , is seeking an Operations Manager to join their team in St. John’s, NL.

The NL Sports Centre’s Operations Manager will oversee the day-to-day activities within all NL Sports Centre (NLSC) facilities to ensure efficient and effective operations and identify areas for improvement. The Operations Manager will assist in planning long-term initiatives for success, work with various partners to determine operational improvements and solutions, and analyze budgets to minimize costs and increase revenue opportunities.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Operations Manager is responsible for strategic direction and leadership for the overall administrative operations, which includes staff and service administration. This role will effectively manage the development and direction of the operational team to drive the growth of revenue, productivity, and promote high-quality customer satisfaction while building relationships and ensuring the integration of strategic plans with company operations. The Operations Manager provides key executive-level support to the Executive Director in all areas of the organization.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide management and guidance to the NLSC business operations and services across all facilities.
  • Develop and implement new business strategies for creating or improving processes and procedures to enhance corporate performance.
  • Monitor performance against goals to ensure that progress is being made and that corrective action is taken if necessary.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director and staff to facilitate the resolution of issues / problems between various lines of business.
  • Responsible for appropriate staff levels, recruitment, hiring, terminations, and performance management of staff.
  • Procure / develop business operations tracking systems (e.g., PO system & inventory / maintenance log).
  • Develop understanding of the online booking platform to monitor and track multiple performance standards / metrics.
  • Assist in budget preparation and monitoring of all NLSC facilities.
  • Monitor financial performance to ensure the NLSC is meeting budgetary commitments as required by public oversight bodies.
  • Analyze and report on the NLSC’s KPI’s (key performance indicators).
  • Examine reports to determine the operational activities of the NLSC and ensure optimum performance.
  • Ensure that all reporting employees adhere to NLSC policies and procedures.
  • Review and develop policies & procedures related to facilities use, operations, and services.
  • Assist the Executive Director in the negotiation and administration of all lease and lease renewals.
  • Develop, foster & maintain excellent working relationships with long-term Partner PSO’s, users of the facilities, volunteers, and clients of the NLSC and services.

Primary Partner Agreements :

  • When necessary, liaise with primary partners for :
  • On-site & building matters and requirements (major repairs / maintenance).
  • Business development opportunities.
  • Optimum functionality of the building systems (water, heating, ventilating, etc.).
  • Building standard requirements and safety code requirements.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance requests and renovations and / or retrofits are practical, legal, and affordable and meet primary partner requirements.
  • Develop layouts and design or re-design of spaces to accommodate specified uses.
  • Negotiate and manage all minor construction projects.
  • Investigate & recommend appropriate furnishings / equipment for NLSC facilities.
  • With assistance from relevant staff, assist in preparation of annual operating budgets and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Report on monthly variances including initiating any corrective action.
  • Negotiate and oversee supplier contracts.
  • Investigate new revenue-generating business ventures and space utilization.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree with preference given to a Bachelor of Commerce or Business.
  • Administration degree or an equivalent Certificate.
  • 5+ years management experience with proven leadership abilities.
  • Project Management, Certified Facility Management, or Facility Management Professional courses would be an asset.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Knowledge of a NL provincial sport system would be an asset.
  • Strong budgetary knowledge and experience in spending control / tracking.
  • Previous experience in negotiation of business contracts and leases.
  • Expertise in all aspects of business operations including customer service, inventory control, accounting, strategic planning, human resources, and general management.
  • Expertise in building management, operations, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrates strong initiative and generation of ideas, development, and implementation of proposals for improved services, efficiencies, and revenue generation.
