Job summary

gategroup Canada Inc. is seeking a motivated Quality Assurance and Food Safety Leader to ensure compliance with HACCP, ISO 22000, and PHAC regulations, while guiding a small team in a fast-paced production setting.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will drive internal audits, CAPA, data analytics on risk trends, and improvements to end-to-end processes, aiming at safe, high-quality food and efficient operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years QA experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Auditing experience and knowledge of HACCP/ISO 22000.
  • Experience managing teams in a unionized environment.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving and data analysis skills.
  • Excellent English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and maintain HACCP/food safety procedures per plan.
  • Lead QA activities including external audits and traceability.
  • Manage a production team of up to 8 employees.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs for food safety, quality and labour control.
  • Lead investigations of product defects and incidents.
  • Oversee CAPA system and corrective actions with leadership.

Job description

We're looking for motivated, engaged people to help make everyone's journeys better.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will be responsible for assuring compliance with all Quality/Food Safety and Safety SOPs, customer and regulatory requirements. You will also be responsible for managing a small team and supporting operational requirements.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. 1. Executes and maintains the required food safety related procedures as defined in the unit HACCP plan and Food Safety Management System.
  2. 2. Leads all QA and food/product safety related activities/initiatives, including but not limited to: external audits, document control, traceability and mock recall exercises, data analysis to identify risk trends.
  3. 3. Leads a production team of up to 8 employees and supports all operational requirements.
  4. 4. Supports the safety program for all employees and ensures compliance.
  5. 5. Develops and maintains key performance metrics as related to food safety, quality and labour controls.
  6. 6. Continuously improves unit procedures for monitoring and ensuring conformance to specifications for our end-to-end process.
  7. 7. Executes internal audits on the elements of food safety.
  8. 8. Leads investigations of product defects, alleged food poisoning, foreign object etc.
  9. 9. Maintains and manages the corrective action/preventive action (CAPA) system and facilitating corrective/preventive action activities with the leadership team.
  10. 10. Assures the accuracy and compliance of HACCP records as defined in the corporate procedures.
  11. 11. Educates (trains) unit staff and managers in quality and food safety related issues.
  12. 12. Collaborates with building maintenance and sanitation teams to meet business needs and to ensure unit hygiene supports compliance with all food safety standards.
  13. 13. Manage outside suppliers and vendors as it relates to QA and food safety.
  14. 14. Manage all expense and labour costs to meet budgeted targets.
  15. 15. Works to build team-cohesion throughout the Unit.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in food science or related field
  • Knowledge of HACCP & ISO 22000
  • Knowledge of PHAC regulations
  • Bachelor's degree in safety, business operations or related field preferred and or four years comparable work experience in an operations manager role.
Work Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years quality assurance experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Auditing experience.
  • Proven ability to work with a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven experience in development and implementation of quality and food safety processes.
  • Minimum five years prior experience managing teams in a unionized environment.
Job Skills

  • Must have strong and effective leadership skills and the ability to successfully manage staff in a Unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of quality auditing, inspection methods
  • Strong investigation and problem-solving skills to identify root causes and practical solutions
  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong organizational skills, able to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task
  • Strong interpersonal skills, interacts well with others, influences all levels of the organization
  • Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook)
  • Excellent reading, writing, and oral communication skills in English
  • Able to work with little supervision, is a self-starter in a fast paced, deadline driven environment
  • Previous exposure/experience in LEAN manufacturing/supply chain is a plus.

  • Data-driven, analytical skills including basic statistics calculation, and/or mathematical comprehension

  • Lean Six Sigma knowledge and continuous-improvement oriented
Language / Communication Skills

Job Dimensions

Type of Employment: Full-time

Work Environment / Requirements of the Job: Regularly stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during shifts. Must be to lift, pull, push, and move products, equipment, and supplies daily. Exposure to cooler and freezer temperatures in production areas.
