Job summary

The City of Saskatoon is seeking a skilled supervisor for the Water Operations team to lead Plant Operators and support staff. You will ensure safe, compliant operations and drive process improvements at the Water Treatment Plant.

You will supervise scheduling and training, enforce safety protocols, and coordinate with maintenance to keep systems running. Eligible candidates hold a Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification or equivalent and possess a strong leadership track record.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent with five years leadership including water treatment experience as Assistant Plant Operator or Plant Operator.
  • Certification and five years of leadership in water treatment roles with four years as Operator.
  • Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification and ability to obtain Class 4 Water Distribution Operator Certification.
  • Certification as Maintenance/Asset/Project Management Professional.
  • Fireman’s Certificate is an asset.
  • Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence and clean driving record.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Teams and SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of water treatment procedures, equipment, safety and WHMIS.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and handle emergencies.
  • Ability to supervise shift work and interact with staff and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, schedules and monitors Water Treatment Plant operations staff with standard operating procedures.
  • Provides training, leadership, and conflict resolution to operations staff.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities and lockout/tagout programs with maintenance staff.
  • Leads daily work coordination and safety meetings.
  • Creates and updates standard operating procedures and plant operation manuals.
  • Assists in defining maintenance work and budget justifications.
  • Participates in training on new processes/equipment.
  • Ensures health and safety rules are followed.
  • Performs duties of Plant or Assistant Operator as needed.
  • Handles other related duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Water Operations Manager, this position supervises and coordinates the work of the plant operations group and performs related duties.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supervises, schedules and monitors Water Treatment Plant operations staff. Makes process adjustments and modifications through Plant Operators and Water Operations Manager to maintain consistency within established operating standards. This also involves coordinating and completing activities such as plant process shutdowns and plant operations troubleshooting.
  • Provides training, leadership, and conflict resolution to employees in the operations group.
  • Acts as liaison between operations and maintenance staff to coordinate maintenance activities, including administration of the lockout tag out program.
  • Leads daily work coordination and safety meetings with operations staff.
  • Creates, reviews and updates standard operating procedures, shutdown procedures, safety documentation and the plant operations manual as required for managerial approval.
  • Assists the Water Operations Manager with defining and prioritizing maintenance work and operations projects including business cases and budget justification.
  • Participates in and conducts training (e.g. operating procedures, equipment operation and safety) including administering training packages to Operations staff on new processes/equipment.
  • Ensures occupational health and safety rules and regulations are adhered to.
  • Performs the duties of the Plant or Assistant Operator as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Degree is a related field and five years of demonstrated leadership experience including four years’ water treatment experience acting as an Assistant Plant Operator or a Plant Operator.
    OR
  • Equivalent education as recognized by the Operator Certification Board to obtain Class 4 Operations
  • Certification and five years of demonstrated leadership experience including four years’ water treatment experience acting as an Assistant Plant Operator or a Plant Operator.
  • Class 4 Water Treatment Operator Certification and ability to obtain Class 4 Water Distribution Operator Certification.
  • Certification as a Maintenance Management Professional, Asset Management Professional, or Project Management Professional.
  • Possession of a valid Fireman’s Certificate would be an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams and SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of water treatment procedures, operations and general practices applied to the care and safe operation of the plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, chemicals, testing and tools used in water treatment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures including job safety analysis, working with hazardous products, knowledge of confined space procedures, and WHMIS.
  • Ability to make minor repairs to the Water Treatment Plant equipment.
  • Ability to remain calm during emergency situations.
  • Ability to supervise the work of subordinates and assume responsibility for the operation of a shift.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees and the public.

Weekly Hours:38.75

Salary Range:$79,809.60to$93,869.28 CADper annum (2023 rates)
