Job summary

ZoomerMedia Limited's CMG is seeking an Online Editor, West to edit articles across Canada, ensuring CP style and Canadian journalistic standards before publication.

Based in Vancouver with a hybrid schedule, you will apply CP style to headlines and copy, fact-check details, tighten grammar under daily deadlines, coordinate with writers and editors, and help evolve CMG's internal style guide while maintaining accuracy and attribution.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional editing experience, ideally in digital news, journalism, or online media.
• Demonstrated working experience with WordPress and CMS platforms.
• Excellent working knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) Style and ethics.
• Understanding of topics we cover, including elections.
• Strong grammar, spelling, and proofreading under deadlines.
• Experience editing for a digital-first, SEO-aware publication is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Edit articles from writers across Canada prior to publishing, within tight daily deadlines.
• Apply CP Style across headlines, body copy, captions, and cutlines.
• Ensure content adheres to Canadian journalistic standards, including attribution and sourcing.
• Fact-check names, dates, figures, and claims; resolve discrepancies with writers.
• Tighten copy for grammar, tone, and readability without losing the writer's voice.
• Verify stories are free of libel and legal risk; escalate as needed.
• Write and edit SEO-friendly headlines and meta descriptions.
• Coordinate with writers and section editors to resolve questions before publish.
• Maintain and evolve CMG's internal style guide as CP style and brand evolve.
• Flag recurring writer errors to the National Online Editor.

Daily Hive Editorial Full Time Vancouver, BC Hybrid $55,000 - $60,000 CAD per year

About the Role

The Online Editor, West is responsible for editing articles written by CMG's Canadian writers prior to publication. This role is the last line of defence before a story goes live — catching factual, structural, grammatical, and style issues, applying Canadian Press (CP) style consistently, and ensuring every piece meets Canadian journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and attribution. The ideal candidate has a sharp eye for detail, a strong grasp of CP style, and sound news judgment.

What You’ll Do

• Edit articles from writers across Canada (Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and surrounding markets) prior to publishing, working within tight daily deadlines.
• Apply Canadian Press (CP) Style consistently across headlines, body copy, captions, and cutlines.
• Ensure all content adheres to Canadian journalistic standards, including accuracy, fairness, balance, attribution, and appropriate sourcing.
• Fact-check names, titles, dates, figures, and claims; flag and resolve discrepancies with writers before publication.
• Review copy for grammar, spelling, clarity, tone, and readability, tightening or restructuring where needed without losing the writer's voice.
• Verify stories are free of libel, defamation, and other legal risk, escalating concerns as appropriate.
• Write and edit SEO-friendly, accurate headlines and meta descriptions consistent with brand voice.
• Confirm proper attribution, sourcing, and permissions for quotes, statistics, and third-party material.
• Coordinate with writers and section editors to resolve outstanding questions quickly ahead of publish.
• Maintain and help evolve CMG's internal style guide as CP style and brand conventions evolve.
• Flag recurring writer errors or training gaps to the National Online Editor

What You Bring

• 2+ years of professional editing experience, ideally in digital news, journalism, or online media.
• Demonstrated working experience with WordPress.
• Excellent working knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) Style.
• An ongoing understanding of the topics we cover (including elections)
• Strong understanding of Canadian journalistic standards and ethics (accuracy, fairness, attribution, avoiding libel).
• Exceptional grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills, with an eye for detail under deadline pressure.
• Thrives in a fast-paced environment and is adaptable to changing priorities
• Experience editing for a digital-first, SEO-aware publication is an asset.
• Comfortable using a CMS and collaborating with remote writers across time zones.
• Post-secondary education in journalism, communications, English, or a related field preferred.
• Familiarity with Canadian cities, culture, and current events is an asset.
