Job summary

The Toronto Star is Canada’s largest daily newspaper, with a broad audience across print and digital platforms. The Digital Producer will join our audience engagement team to shape how readers experience our journalism through newsletters and reader conversations on thestar.com and off-platform.

You’ll operate in a fast-paced live-news environment, producing daily newsletters, curating content, moderating comments, and using analytics to grow audience and influence coverage.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Produce newsletters daily: Build, schedule, and deploy newsletters across the Star's portfolio, ensuring consistent delivery to readers' inboxes every day of the week.
  • Write and curate newsletter content: Draft light copy and curate story selections for newsletters, working alongside team of newsletter writers and editors.
  • Be responsive to breaking news: Monitor developing stories and write timely inserts — such as a breaking news update into a morning newsletter — when major events require a fast response.
  • Manage Reddit engagement: Post and engage in communities across subreddits, fostering audience relationships and growing the Star's presence on the platform — with a focus on evenings and weekends.
  • Spark reader engagement: Curate and moderate reader commenting on thestar.com and participate in conversations, representing the Star with editorial judgment and community care.
  • Support audience growth: Use analytics and platform insights to track engagement, identify opportunities, and help the team execute on audience-building strategies.

The Toronto Star is seeking a Digital Producer who thrives on speed, creativity, and innovation to join its audience engagement team. This role is at the centre of how audiences experience our journalism — whether through newsletters or conversations with readers both on and off platform.

As part of the audience engagement team, you’ll experiment with new ways of connecting with our community through newsletters, commenting and off-site platforms like Reddit. You will help shape stories and package them for maximum impact. We’re looking for someone who works well within the urgency of a live news environment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound editorial judgment, command of digital publishing systems, and fluency in the latest tools and techniques of audience engagement. As part of this role, the candidate will be entrusted with engaging readers in real-time and managing communities on thestar.com and off platform.

This team operates seven days a week. Early morning, late evening, and weekend work will be required.

What You'll Do

Produce newsletters daily: Build, schedule, and deploy newsletters across the Star's portfolio, ensuring consistent delivery to readers' inboxes every day of the week.

  • Experience in digital journalism, online publishing, or a related field — whether through a newsroom, digital media outlet, or equivalent hands-on work
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate copy quickly under deadline pressure
  • Familiarity with newsletter platforms and email publishing tools
  • Comfort engaging with online communities — Reddit experience is a strong asset
  • Sound editorial judgment and an instinct for what stories will resonate with audiences
  • An understanding of SEO, web analytics, and audience engagement metrics
  • Fluency with digital publishing systems and content management tools (CMS)
  • The ability to work independently and stay calm and decisive in a fast-moving, breaking news environment
  • Flexibility to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of the collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M.

The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement.

This position will be in Toronto.
