Job summary

City of Edmonton seeks an OHS Advisor to lead safety transformation within the OH&S Services team, driving a loss-prevention mindset and guiding frontline workers with strategic standards.

You will assess programs, coordinate audits, and partner with leaders to implement safety standards, while maintaining on-call presence for after-hours safety concerns. Hybrid work arrangements may apply.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline with coursework in health and safety.
  • Four (4) years experience with a Degree, Six (6) years with a Diploma, Eight (8) years with a Certificate as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a primary technical resource providing OHS knowledge and solutions.
  • Support, educate, and guide leaders in applying City policies.
  • Bridge corporate services with frontline providers for COR Audit planning.
  • Coordinate Leadership review events.
  • Assess effectiveness of COE safety programs in reducing incidents.
  • Promote COE safety campaigns to inform staff and boost participation.
  • Review and develop COE safety standards.
  • Maintain an on-call presence for safety concerns outside regular hours.

Job Number: 56155Help Lead the City’s Safety Transformation! We are seeking a proactive OHS Advisor to be a driving force in our cultural transformation. In this role, you’ll move beyond mere compliance to champion a loss-prevention mindset, turning the vision of our 3-year strategic plan—the Roadmap to Loss Prevention—into a daily reality for those who serve Edmonton.As a key part of our OH&S Services team, you will ensure our OHS program doesn’t just meet legislative standards but sets a new industry benchmark. This is a highly collaborative role where you will act as a trusted advisor to people leaders and frontline workers, providing the strategic guidance and technical expertise required to mitigate risk for our frontline service providers.What will you do?Act as a primary technical resource, ensuring supervisors and employees have immediate access to specialized Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) knowledge and solutions for their unique business needsSupport, educate, and guide people leaders in applying City policies. This ensures informed decision-making that prioritizes employee protection and minimizes corporate liabilityBridge the corporate services with frontline service providers ensuring alignment in COR Audit planning, representing the City with interactions with Provincial authorities, and ensuring the needs or the business area are represented in the corporate standardsSupport in the coordination, planning, and execution of Leadership review eventsAssess the effectiveness of the City of Edmonton (COE) safety programs in reducing work-related incidents through pulse checks or internal auditing of specific program elementsPromote and drive COE health and safety campaigns to inform staff and boost employee participation rates across all departmentsContribute as a partner to the review and development of COE safety standardsWork alongside internal and external partners to brainstorm and implement creative safety solutions that address unique municipal challengesMaintain a dedicated on-call presence to provide immediate assistance and guidance for safety concerns that arise outside of regular office hoursQualifications:Degree or Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline with coursework in health and safetyDegree with Four (4) years experience, Diploma with Six (6) years of experience, Certificate with Eight (8) years of experience as an OHS professional, with loss prevention experience and working knowledge in areas such as process safety management, safety management system development, and implementation, incident/injury prevention, hazard identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysisAssets:Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)Experience in the following:Leading incident investigations to identify root causes and corrective actionsConducting audits (internal/external)Reviewing and assessing third-party safety plans, procedures, and practices for the safe and effective delivery of workContractor managementPreparing statistical reports on safety performance and recommending improvement opportunitiesSkills required for success:Knowledge of municipalities, municipal governance, and unionized environmentsKnowledge of internal and external audits, the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program, and/or ISO45001 Occupational Health and Safety StandardExceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with frontline workers, managers, project managers, and executivesIntermediate to advanced computer skills, including Google applications such as Gmail, Gchat, Meets, Docs, Sheets and SlidesStrong time management and organizational skills to prioritize activities, adapt to change, and stay focused in a dynamic environmentEffective problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively analyze situations and problems, identify root causes, and recommend solutionsAlignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (https://bit.ly/4brRrXm)Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusionConditions of Employment:Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this positionValid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent).
