How Nurse Practitioners (NP) support our teams at Grand River Hospital
At Grand River Hospital, our Nurse Practitioners (NP) are key members of our interdisciplinary teams. Delivering exceptional care to our patients and ensuring a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.
The MAID Coordinator (Nurse Practitioner) is accountable for the development, implementation and supporting delivery of Medical Assistance in Dying services (MAID) for Grand River Hospital’s clinical programs. The coordinator supports health care providers, patients and family caregivers to access appropriate services and resources based on current legislative protocols and program specific best practice, and in accordance with the clinical and ethical standards of Grand River Hospital. Working autonomously and in a collaborative practice model with physicians, professional practice, advanced practice colleagues, patient relations and clinical leadership at all levels, the MAID Coordinator will coordinate all aspects of the MAID process including navigation of requests from internal and external sources, completing MAID assessments, providing MAID, assisting with documentation and reporting requirements both provincially and federally, and developing and maintaining a robust repository of education resources.
Required Qualifications
MAID Coordinator, Nurse Practitioner (NP):
- Must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class (EC) or eligible to write Extended Class exam
- Masters preferred
- Completion of an accredited controlled substance course according to College of Nurses of Ontario standard
- Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in a health care setting with a broad knowledge base in health systems navigation
- Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada and Ontario
- Completion of (or be willing to complete) the Canadian MAID Curriculum through CAMAP
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and assertively within an inter professional health care team and with community partners
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal skills as well as negotiation, consultation and client advocacy skills that keep the patient at the centre of the work
- Demonstrated ability to support patients, families and staff through crisis situations
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships and teams
- Ability to be self-directed and work autonomously
- Ability to function within a collaborative practice model
- Ability to promote professional education and advances knowledge through research and scholarly activities
- Basic Cardiac Life Support required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support an asset
Preferred Qualifications
- Training and experience in project management
- Crucial Conversations or equivalent
- Understanding of communication styles and navigating difficult communication
- Canadian Nursing Association Certification in Hospice Palliative Care or relevant specialty certification preferred
- Post-graduate certificate and experience in palliative care
- 3 to 5 years’ experience in working with MAID, hospice or palliative care
