As a Nurse Practitioner (NP) within our Emergency Department (ED), you’ll have a chance to broaden your clinical expertise and develop nursing leadership skills. This role offers a unique opportunity to improve your understanding and interpretation of Radiology, while also gaining experience with technologies such as the POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound).

This expanded nursing role allows for a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage patients in collaboration with the ED Physician.

You will be part of the leadership team for the ED, providing nursing leadership in knowledge-based practice, development of standards, processes and quality initiatives enhancing the care for ED patients, with the focus/majority of practice being clinical-based. This position also provides you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of hospital corporate functions.

About this team:
Mount Sinai Emergency Department receives approximately 61,000 visits annually. The care delivery system is based upon a modified Primary Nursing model. Medical directives have been developed to promote and support autonomous nursing practice within the emergency specialty. This team has formal and informal supports in place for ongoing clinical learning and development.

• Provide leadership in advanced nursing practice through the collaborative management of patients, families or groups within the ED patient population.
• Initiate and/or coordinate the implementation of a comprehensive plan of care developed in collaboration with the medical team, the patient and family, and other multidisciplinary team members as necessary.
• Evaluate and modify the plan in response to changes in the patient’s status.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives that improve patient care quality in ED Service, in accordance with the strategic goals of the organization and person-centred care. This includes a leadership role in quality assurance in the ED, leading selected quality activities and administrative duties including participating as a member/leader of departmental and corporate committees.
• Develop partnerships within Mount Sinai and the community, including community services, multi-cultural services, etc. to enhance continuity of care for patients.
• Deliver, coordinate and participate in education and professional development activities/programs.
• Perform activities to further develop and strengthen the profession including the supervision of students.
• Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

Job Requirements

Must-have:

• Current registration (Extended Class) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Master's degree in Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner (Adult preferred) program or equivalent
• Completion of CNO approved Controlled Substances Education
• Minimum 5 years of recent Emergency Department nursing experience
• Member of RNAO or NPAO and other professional associations/organizations relevant to the role
• ACLS and BCLS

Nice-to-have:

• Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
• CNA Emergency Nursing Certification (ENC C)

Skills and Knowledge:

• Expertise in comprehensive assessments which includes a collection of both historical and psychosocial data, the pathophysiology of the disease process, recognition of risk factors and physical examination; includes ability to assess health status, diagnosis, development of a treatment plan, implementation of plan, and follow-up and evaluation of the patient status
• Comprehensive knowledge and a high level of clinical competence in caring for this complex patient population
• Expert in the use and interpretation of screening techniques and diagnostic techniques, tests and tools
• Experience in nursing leadership and demonstrated dedication to ongoing academic development and excellence
• Flexibility to work rotating shifts including weekends/evenings
