Sinai Health is seeking an exceptional leader to undertake the exciting, role of Nurse Practitioner, Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank (RHOHMB), ‘the Milk Bank’.
This advanced practice nursing position works collaboratively with the Senior Medical Director and the Operations Director to ensure clinical and operational excellence aligned with donor and recipient needs. The Nurse Practitioner will play a critical role in supporting a high-performing, person-centered care environment that prioritizes safety, quality, and efficiency.
In this unique role, the Nurse Practitioner will provide expert clinical guidance and oversight in the day-to-day operations of the Milk Bank, with a particular focus on supporting RN Lactation Consultants in the assessment and acceptance of milk donors. All practices must align with internal policies and procedures, as well as the standards set forth by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA).
The Nurse Practitioner will also contribute to strategic decision-making, assist in addressing urgent and sensitive clinical matters, and help drive process improvements that support the ongoing growth and excellence of the Milk Bank program.
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Nurse Practitioner for a newly established, flexible part-time role within our Milk Bank program. This advanced practice nursing role will support the assessment and approval process for women applying to become breast milk donors.
About The Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank
Located at our Mount Sinai Hospital campus, the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank is the sole human milk bank in Ontario. We collect, process, and distribute pasteurized donor milk to medically fragile hospitalized infants across the province
With about 1,500 low birth weight babies born in Ontario annually, our mission is crucial. Around 70% of preterm babies in the province lack sufficient volume of their parent’s milk, which is essential for vital nutrients and immune protection. Donor milk significantly improves health outcomes for preterm infants, reducing serious complications.
The Milk Bank is regularly involved in research projects. Our team's contributions frequently lead to authorship in presentations and publications.
In This Role You Will
- Review and approve donor applications
- Sign-off on milk batches to ensure processing criterion met (e.g., critical temperature limits, microbiology culture results)
- Counsel and ensure timely follow-up with donors having positive laboratory results (e.g. HIV, Hepatitis, including follow up with PCP)
- Provide expedited approval and or counselling to donors due to time constraints (e.g. donors with travel plans, expiring milk, NICU mom screening with XS milk)
- Provide on-site support in the case of rare events such as recall/equipment failure
- Provide consultation to external partner organization clinicians (e.g. dietitians and physicians e.g. milk preparation, product / nutrients)
- Attend Milk Bank operations touchpoint with Senior Medical Director and Operations Director as required
- Ensure department compliance with all safety codes, infection control, Public Health and Safety, legal, regulatory and Accreditation requirements
- Support annual milk bank HMBANA accreditation including review and updates to SOP manual and donor deferral manual
- Promote a culture of safety and safe practices in the RHOHMB
- Participate in Toronto Public Health Food Safe Inspections
- Liaise with key stakeholders (e.g. Medical Lead, Pharmacology Advisor) as required
- Establish, promote and maintain good public relations through effective communication within and outside Sinai Health
- Foster a collaborative inter-professional practice between the RHOHMB and all other related medical, clinical and support departments
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Successful completion of a Master’s degree in nursing and a Nurse Practitioner Certificate or equivalent from a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)-accredited academic institution
- Current registration (Extended Class) in good standing with the CNO
- Two years clinical experience in Paediatric care with NICU staff nursing experience
Preferred
- Proven expertise in the implementation of the Nurse Practitioner role
- National Certification Corporation (NCC) Board Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
- Membership in Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) and other organizations relevant to the role
- Demonstrated experience through roles of advanced practitioner, educator, researcher and administration/leadership
Skills and Knowledge
- Demonstrated ability to sensitively communicate with patients/families in vulnerable situations
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and customer services skills
- Excellent organization, time management, and evaluation skills
- Demonstrated decision making, problem recognition/solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Proven commitment to collaborative practice and ability to work effectively independently and within an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to utilize information technology
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
