Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a dynamic and versatileMultimediaJournalistto join our team. This is a unique opportunity toproduceengaging video and audio content and elevate our storytelling. This role is at the forefront of the Star’s commitment to audience-first journalism.

As aMultimediaJournalist, you will collaborate with reporters, editors, producers, and the broader digital team to create content that informs, engages, and inspires our diverse audience. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism, thrive under tight deadlines, and be an exceptional script writer and communicator.

This role falls within the Journalist classification in the Star's Editorial Department. It is a Unifor Local 87M position, based in Toronto.

What you will do

  • Create short videos featuring Star journalists explaining their reporting.
  • Produce interview videos, explainers, and other multimedia content that enhances audience understanding of key stories.
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors to transform complex stories into compelling audio and video content for a variety of platforms (thestar.com, YouTube, TikTok, etc.).
  • Work on live and pre-recorded virtual events, including interviews and panel discussions.
  • Report news and conduct interviews on camera/microphone, both in studio and in the field.
  • Develop, script, and produce high-quality podcasts, including narrative series, news podcasts and video podcasts.
  • Guide non-technical team members in video and audio production, providing clear and patient communication.
  • Collaborate with editors and the digital team to identify audience needs and content opportunities.
  • Optimize content for distribution across platforms — including thestar.com, YouTube, TikTok, Apple Podcasts and podcast apps
  • Ensure audio and video content meets the Star’s journalistic standards.
  • Innovate and experiment with new formats and tools to continuously improve multimedia offerings.

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement.This position will be in Toronto.

Qualifications
  • Experience creating multimedia content in major newsrooms.
  • Excellent interviewing skills and on camera/microphone presence.
  • Expertise in video and audio production, including scripting, recording, and editing.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools for video and audio production.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to adapt complex topics for a variety of platforms (YouTube, TikTok, thestar.com, Apple podcasts, etc.) and understand how best to serve the audience on each platform.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with patience and clarity in guiding non-technical team members.
  • Ability to thrive under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
