Job Description

The Toronto Star is looking for a driven, creative and collaborative editor to join its newsroom as a Team Editor. This is a role for a seasoned journalist with a restless curiosity — someone who wakes up with story ideas, can spot what's missing from the public conversation, and knows how to guide reporters to do their most ambitious work.

This editor will work across beats and subject areas, which means we're looking for someone who thinks broadly, moves quickly, and can find the story — and the right format for it.

This role falls within the Team Editor classification in the Star's Editorial Department. It is a Unifor Local 87M position, based in Toronto.

What You Will Do

  • Generate and champion story ideas across news, features and enterprise — consistently bringing fresh angles, under-told perspectives and ambitious formats to the daily and weekly planning conversation.
  • Coach reporters through every stage of the editorial process — from source development and newsgathering strategy to story structure, narrative voice and final edit — with a focus on building skills and confidence.
  • Assign and develop stories with a clear understanding of audience, impact and the Star's editorial priorities, ensuring a wide range of voices and communities are represented in our coverage.
  • Shape stories before they are written by working closely with reporters on pitches, outlines and early drafts, asking the right questions to sharpen focus and raise the level of reporting.
  • Edit copy with rigour and speed, maintaining the Star's journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness and clarity across all story types — from breaking news to longer-form narrative.
  • Think across formats, identifying when a story is best told through text, video, audio, photography, social, etc. — and collaborating with multimedia, visuals and audience teams to bring that vision to life.
  • Contribute to digital planning, including SEO-aware packaging, headline writing and mobile-first presentation of stories.

Salary: $73,515.72 to $101,881.38

Qualifications
  • Significant experience as a journalist, editor or both at a daily news organization, with a demonstrated track record of strong, agenda-setting journalism.
  • A proven ability to generate compelling story ideas and see them through to publication — you are an ideas engine who never runs dry.
  • Deep skill in coaching and developing reporters, with the patience, instincts and communication to bring out the best in writers at every experience level.
  • Strong line-editing abilities and structural instincts — you can diagnose what a story needs at any stage of the drafting process.
  • Fluency across formats, including digital text, social, video and audio — you understand what makes a story work in each medium.
  • Excellent news judgment and a commitment to accuracy, including the ability to work quickly and calmly in a deadline-driven environment.
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to work across departments — including audience, visuals and multimedia — to develop and execute ambitious editorial projects.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools and an understanding of what drives reader engagement across platforms.
  • A commitment to including underrepresented communities in storytelling.
