Job summary

The University of Calgary is seeking a Microbiology Laboratory Technician to join the Diagnostic Services Unit. This full-time position supports Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular, and Parasitology workflows and requires careful adherence to SOPs and biosafety practices.

The role involves preparing specimens, managing equipment and inventories, and maintaining accurate records across multiple microbiology sections. Training and competency assessments are provided.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Microbiology or closely related discipline required/considered with experience.
• Basic microbiology laboratory experience preferred.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Receive, verify, label, organize, aliquot, store, retrieve, transfer, archive, and dispose of specimens.
• Prepare specimens, workstations, reagents, media, and QC materials.
• Provide technical laboratory support across Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular, and Parasitology.
• Follow SOPs and safety practices.
• Maintain records and LIMS entries.
• Monitor temperatures and environmental conditions.
• Support inventory and supply management.
• Complete required orientation and competency assessments.
