Job summary

Halton Healthcare in Milton, Ontario is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for a temporary casual role (approx. 6 months) to perform pre- and post-analytical duties in the laboratory, including specimen collection, processing, and data entry.

Qualifications include Laboratory Assistant Certification, OSMT/CSMLS registration, 3–5 years in a clinical lab, and experience with equipment maintenance and QC. English proficiency required; phlebotomy skills are an asset.

  • Experience in equipment maintenance and quality control.
  • Knowledge of laboratory computer systems.
  • Participates actively in continuing education and applies knowledge where applicable.
  • Familiar with routine automated equipment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Phlebotomy skills are an asset.
  • Experience in blood smear preparation and staining are an asset.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre- and post-analytical testing duties.
  • Manage specimen collection, receipt, accessioning and processing.
  • Prepare and analyze blood slides as required.
  • Data entry and results documentation.
  • Handle blood products and associated workflows.
  • Maintain inventory and manage hazardous/non-hazardous waste.
  • Maintain/Change reagents and solutions on equipment.
  • Support shipping of specimens for transport.
  • Assist Laboratory Manager with duties as needed.

Responsible to to perform various functions related to the pre and post analytical phase of testing. These functions can include duties related to specimen collection/receipt/accessioning and processing, blood slide preparation, data entry, blood product reception/accessioning, data entry, inventory, hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, maintaining /changing solutions/reagents on equipment, loading patient or quality control specimens onto analyzers, equipment maintenance, preparing and shipping specimens for transportation, issuing of blood products. Other duties as required by the Laboratory Manager, Technical Department Head.

Status: Temporary Casual (Approx. 6 months)

Hours:Monday - Sunday; All shifts, weekends and holidays (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs)

Salary: $30.490 to $35.160 per hour
