Medical Device R&D Associate – Electronics & Firmware

Location: Montreal, QC (Hybrid – Average of 3 days in-office per week)

About the Role:

We are looking for a junior engineering degree graduate with a background in biomedical engineering with electronics expertise or electrical engineering with experience or high interest in medical devices. This role is ideal for someone starting or looking to start their career in the medical device industry, with a focus on supporting existing products while also contributing to electronics development, embedded firmware, and system integration for pulmonary function devices.

As part of our R&D team, you will work under the supervision of Engineering Managers for Hardware and Firmware related tasks, and take on support engineering tasks for current products, ensuring reliability, troubleshooting issues, and working closely with manufacturing and quality teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support engineering for existing medical device products, including troubleshooting, reliability improvements, and sustaining engineering tasks.
  • Assist in the design and development of electronic systems and embedded firmware (C/C++) for medical devices.
  • Participate in all stages of product development, verification, and validation in compliance with medical device standards (IEC 60601, ISO 14971).
  • Support testing and troubleshooting of embedded systems using STM 32 microprocessors and other platforms.
  • Help develop test strategies for electrical circuits and systems, ensuring compliance with medical device regulations.
  • Contribute to design transfer to manufacturing, considering quality assurance and manufacturability.
  • Document work rigorously, following ISO 13485 and FDA quality system requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (mechatronics/electronics focus) or Electrical Engineering with an interest in Medical Devices.
  • 0 to 3 years of relevant experience (recent graduates are welcome!).
  • Experience with firmware development (C, C++) and STM 32 microprocessors.
  • Basic understanding of communication protocols (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C).
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscope, multimeter, etc.).
  • Strong interest in medical devices, embedded systems, and electronics development.
  • Bilingual (English and French) is an asset.
