Job summary

Ontario Public Service (OPS) invites qualified physicians to join the Medical Consultant role within the Provider Services Branch. Role Summary

The Medical Consultant provides professional medical leadership and expertise to support the delivery and oversight of Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) eligibility programs. The position focuses on:

• Support for negotiations with the Ontario Medical Association related to physician remuneration
• Medical review and adjudication of health program surgical adjudication matters
• Accountability and oversight of publicly funded health services
• Strategic advice on health policy and program delivery
• Supporting responsible governance of OHIP-funded services across Ontario

The Provider Services Branch plays a vital role in supporting the effective administration and accountability of Ontario's publicly funded health care system. Working at the intersection of medicine, policy, and program delivery, the branch collaborates with healthcare professionals, government partners, and stakeholders to support the fair and effective delivery of insured health services. As part of a team of experienced professionals, you will contribute your clinical expertise to complex medical and policy matters that help shape programs, inform decision-making, and strengthen healthcare services for Ontarians across the province.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• Medical Degree from a university of recognized standing
• Valid license to practice medicine in the Province of Ontario.

Medical Knowledge and Health System Expertise

• Medical Degree from a university of recognized standing and a valid licence to practise medicine in Ontario.
• Demonstrated understanding of clinical practices, treatments, standards of care, and the application of medical evidence.
• Knowledge of Ontario's healthcare system, including OHIP, physician remuneration models, and the Schedule of Benefits for Physician Services
• Ability to apply medical expertise to assess complex cases, interpret healthcare information, and provide sound recommendations.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex medical, policy, and program issues.
• Experience conducting research, interpreting data, and assessing evidence to support decision-making.
• Ability to identify risks, trends, and emerging issues and develop practical solutions and recommendations.
• Sound judgment and critical thinking skills to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.

Negotiation and Relationship Management Skills

• Proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with physicians, healthcare organizations, legal representatives, government partners, and other stakeholders.
• Experience participating in negotiations and discussions involving complex medical, policy, or program matters.
• Ability to influence, facilitate consensus, and navigate sensitive issues with professionalism and diplomacy.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse groups and interests.

Communication and Advisory Skills

• Exceptional written communication skills with experience preparing reports, briefing materials, recommendations, and other complex correspondence.
• Strong verbal communication and presentation skills with the ability to explain complex medical and policy matters to varied audiences.
• Experience providing expert advice and clinical consultation to support operational, program, or policy decisions.
• Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and persuasively while adapting messaging to meet audience needs.
