Job summary

Kingston Health Sciences Centre in Kingston, Ontario, is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) to perform GI tract diagnostic tests and support the Medicine Program. You will collect specimens, run breath tests including 13C Urea, manage quality control, and communicate results to physicians while maintaining high patient care standards.

Minimum registration with MLT of Ontario (General or Biochemistry) and at least 2 years’ experience; temporary part-time role with day shifts.

• Analyze and report GI lab tests and communicate results to physicians and care teams.
• Adhere to approved safety and confidentiality standards in a multidisciplinary setting.

DESCRIPTION:

Within the Medicine Program, the Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) performs duties pertaining to the investigation and diagnosis of clinical diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Maintains the highest standards in patient care, professional integrity, efficiency and procedural accuracy. Responsible for participation in departmental, hospital and educational activities, which are supportive of professional and corporate objectives. Adheres to professional obligations as required by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. The MLT is responsible for delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES :

• Responsible to patient health education and screening.
• Performs laboratory and diagnostic examinations for 13C Urea Breath Test, Lactose Hydrogen Breath Test, Glucose Hydrogen Breath Test, ,Fecal weight, Esophageal Manometry, 24 Hour PH study, Anorectal Manometry, Video Capsule Endoscopy and BRAVO Wireless Capsule study
• Collect Collect patient specimens in accordance with established techniques, Ensures specimens submitted for testing meet the established criteria for acceptance..
• Completes delegated controlled acts for Nasogastric Probe Insertion and Anorectal Probe Insertion according to established policies and procedures
• Maintain records of quality control and quality assurance in accordance to established policies.
• Maintain instruments and equipment in compliance with established procedures.
• Monitor results of all analyses performed and ensure abnormal results are brought to the attention of the appropriate individual based upon established procedures.
• Responsible for analyzing and reporting GI Lab tests
• Prepare procedure reports for physician review and interpretation.
• Provide enhanced and effective communication and information sharing between all health care providers as well as patient and the family.
• Maintains appropriate documentation related to all patients under their care.
• Develops, reviews, updates, implements and evaluates educational material for patients and family members
• Participates in ongoing research projects within the clinical area.
• Maintains a high standard of personal competence through continuing education and ongoing critical evaluation of professional experience.
• Collate data for statistical reporting.
• Observes standard biohazard and other safety precautions.
• Works discreetly with confidential information.
• Able to function independently as well as in a multidisciplinary setting

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current Registration with Medical Laboratory Technologist of Ontario General or discipline concentration in Biochemistry.
• Preferred Basic Life support (BCL)Minimum 2 years experience as an MLT in clinical or private laboratory setting.
• Commitment to standards of excellence and accountability
• Commitment to provide a positive patient experience with adequate support and positive patient outcomes.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Accreditation Canada and the Quality Management System.
• Willingness to learn and complete Delegated Controlled Acts of Nasogastric and Anorectalinsertions and and achieve Recommendation for Approval to Credentials Committee.DCA 14 and DCA 15
• Demonstrated ability to organize time and completion of designated duties while managing routine tasks of daily laboratory operation.
• Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately, be self-motivated, and establish priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
• Ability to communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with patients, family members and all health care professionals.
• Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload.
