Job summary

Intelligent Wellhead Systems (IWS) in Calgary, Canada, is seeking a Mechanical Design Intern for a 16‑month term from May 2027 to August 2028. You will experience a full design lifecycle from initial concepts through prototyping and testing to production, gaining substantial responsibility in a junior engineering role.

You will collaborate with manufacturing teams to develop drawings, use SolidWorks for parts and assemblies, and support R&D hardware and field technicians.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a 3rd year Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering program.
• Strong experience with SolidWorks is required.
• Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

• Create drawings and design packages for oil field equipment with manufacturing teams.
• Use SolidWorks to design parts and assemblies and prepare drawings for machine shops.
• Write and modify assembly procedures and bill-of-materials for outsourced manufacturing.
• Ensure accuracy and precision of dimensions, tolerances, materials, and specifications.
• Collaborate with machine shops and vendors to price and prototype designs.
• Translate concepts into precise technical drawings meeting industry standards.
• Support engineers from R&D Hardware and field technicians.
• Refine concepts and drawings with mechanical engineers and update drawings as needed.

Interns can expect to see their projects from initial design, through prototyping, and testing, and on to full production in a single work term. IWS prides itself on giving full product design responsibility to its interns, thereby allowing them to have a powerful learning experience while on their work term. This position is very similar to a junior engineering position.

• Work with the manufacturing teams, contract manufacturers and peers on creating drawings and design packages for oil field equipment.
• Use SolidWorks to design parts and assemblies as well as prepare drawings for machine shops.
• Write and modify assembly procedures and bill-of-materials tables for outsourced manufacturing.
• Ensure the accuracy and precision of dimensions, tolerances, materials, and specifications in the drawings.
• Work with machine shops and part vendors to establish pricing and build prototypes of designs.
• Translate concepts, sketches, and rough drafts from engineers or designers into precise technical drawings that meet industry standards and specifications.

• Strong mechanical design skills (machine component design, strength of materials, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, corrosion, drawing, dimension tolerances etc.) are an asset
• Strong commitment to quality
• Uploading samples of technical documents and SolidWorks files to demonstrate skills is beneficial

Education

• Currently enrolled in 3rd year curriculum in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
