Job summary

New Flyer is seeking a Field Service Technician to maintain and repair our diverse bus fleet across Canada and the US. You will diagnose advanced systems, perform retrofits, and provide on-site support to ensure peak performance and customer satisfaction.

You will work with diesel, electric, and hydrogen drivetrains, mentor junior mechanics, and stay current with evolving technology while upholding safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Five+ years in a similar role with heavy‑duty buses or trucks.
  • Certification as RT/tech; Red Seal preferred; EV/diagnostics certifications beneficial.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% and possess a valid passport.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair diesel, electric, and hydrogen drivetrains, HVAC, driveline and electrical systems.
  • Lead servicing and repair of complex HVAC systems for comfort and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot high‑voltage electrical systems with advanced tools.
  • Oversee final inspection to meet safety and performance standards before certification.
  • Mentor Mechanic III and II team members to uphold workmanship standards.
  • Stay updated with industry advancements and integrate new tech into maintenance.

Position Summary

Are you a skilled mechanic with experience in both traditional and cutting‑edge technologies, or an aspiring apprentice eager to grow? Join New Flyer as a Field Service Technician, where you'll play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing our diverse fleet. You will ensure that our buses, from diesel engines to electric drivetrains, operate at their peak performance. In addition to your mechanical expertise, you'll provide essential on‑site support across various locations in Canada and the US. This dynamic, customer‑facing position involves troubleshooting, repairing equipment, completing retrofits, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction through professional service. You will work closely with teams from both MCI and New Flyer, enhancing operational efficiency and fostering strong customer relations.

What You'll Do
  • Diagnose and repair advanced systems, including diesel, electric, and hydrogen fuel cell engines, HVAC systems, driveline components, and electrical systems.
  • Lead the servicing and repair of complex HVAC systems to ensure optimal passenger comfort and system efficiency.
  • Conduct in‑depth troubleshooting and repairs of high‑voltage electrical systems and drivetrains for electric buses, using advanced diagnostic tools.
  • Oversee the final inspection process for fleet vehicles, ensuring all repairs and maintenance meet safety and performance standards before certification.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior mechanics, mentoring Mechanic III and II team members to uphold high standards of workmanship.
  • Stay updated with industry advancements and integrate new technologies into your work, contributing to the evolution of maintenance practices for electric and hydrogen vehicles.
What You Need to Be Successful
  • Minimum of five years experience in a similar position, preferably with heavy‑duty transit buses or trucks.
  • Technical expertise with diesel engines, driveline components, electrical systems, and electric vehicle maintenance; familiarity with diagnostic devices such as DDEC, ATEC readers, Cummins Insite, DDDL, Allison DOC, Wabco Toolbox, Bendix ACOM.
  • Proficiency with shop tools, diagnostic devices, and repair equipment.
  • Certification: Certified Truck & Coach Technician (310T) or pursuit of certification; Red Seal preferred. Additional certifications related to electric vehicles or advanced diagnostics are beneficial.
  • High level of professionalism and strong customer‑service skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain detailed reports and logs.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time; a valid passport required.
  • Strong understanding of safety practices and effective use of personal protective equipment.
