Job summary

Russel Metals is seeking a dependable Material Handler to support our production facility in Winnipeg. The role involves operating overhead cranes and forklifts, moving steel and fabricated products, loading/unloading, and maintaining organized material flow to minimize downtime.

Candidates should have experience in a manufacturing setting, a strong safety mindset, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. This on-site position offers opportunities for growth within a safety-conscious team.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, steel processing, or industrial environment preferred.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts is an asset.
  • Ability to lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts and other material-handling equipment to move steel and fabricated products.
  • Load, unload, stage, and organize raw materials, work-in-process, and finished products.
  • Deliver material to machine operators in a timely manner to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
  • Move completed material and finished products to storage or staging areas.
  • Assist with material handling and movement to support production needs.
  • Maintain organized storage areas and ensure clear aisles and workspaces.
  • Assist with loading/unloading trucks and perform routine equipment inspections.

We are looking for a dependable, safety-conscious team member who takes pride in keeping production moving. The successful candidate understands that effective material handling is an essential part of productivity and works proactively with machine operators and the production team to minimize downtime and keep the facility running efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment to move steel and fabricated products throughout the facility.
  • Load, unload, stage, and organize raw materials, work-in-process, and finished products.
  • Deliver material to machine operators in a timely manner to minimize equipment downtime and maintain production flow.
  • Remove completed material and finished products from machines and move them to designated staging or storage areas.
  • Assist machine operators with material handling, part movement, loading, unloading, and other production-related activities.
  • Monitor production areas and anticipate material-handling requirements to keep machines operating continuously.
  • Verify material identification and ensure material is moved to the correct location or production area.
  • Maintain organized material storage areas and ensure aisles, work areas, and production areas remain clear and accessible.
  • Assist with loading and unloading trucks as required.
  • Perform routine inspections of forklifts, cranes, and material-handling equipment and report any issues or unsafe conditions.
  • Follow all applicable workplace health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain accurate material identification and follow established procedures for traceability.
  • Communicate effectively with machine operators, supervisors, and other members of the production team.
  • Assist with general housekeeping and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized production environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, steel processing, or industrial environment is preferred.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts is an asset.
  • Previous material-handling experience is an asset.
  • Ability to safely handle and move heavy and oversized materials.
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety and safe material-handling practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks based on production requirements.
  • Willingness to learn and operate different types of material-handling and production equipment.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and handle materials and components weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and work on your feet for extended periods.
  • Ability to work around heavy equipment, moving machinery, steel products, and industrial production environments.
  • Ability to safely perform material-handling tasks using cranes, forklifts, and other equipment.
Working Conditions
  • Industrial manufacturing and fabrication environment.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, metal products, and moving equipment.
  • Work may involve varying temperatures and conditions within the facility.
  • Requires strict adherence to workplace health and safety procedures.
  • Position may require working alternating shifts, overtime, and occasional weekends based on production requirements.
