Job summary

Primary Objective of the Position:

The Manager, Training & Ground Handling is responsible for leading Cargojet’s training and development strategy while providing oversight of third-party ground-handling operations across the organization.

The role works closely with operational leaders, subject matter experts, internal stakeholders, and external service providers to ensure employees and operational partners have the knowledge, skills, resources, and support required to operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Cargojet’s standards and regulatory requirements.

The Manager is responsible for developing and implementing effective learning solutions, supporting operational readiness, managing third-party ground-handling relationships, monitoring service performance, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. The role requires a strong combination of leadership, operational understanding, stakeholder management, and training expertise.

Key Responsibilities:

Training & Development

  • Lead the design and delivery of Cargojet’s ground handling training across all stations, aligned with business objectives, operational requirements, regulatory standards, and employee development needs.
  • Partner with subject matter experts to translate technical, operational, regulatory, and business requirements into effective training programs and learning solutions.
  • Ensure training programs remain current and responsive to changes in processes, systems, regulations, operational requirements, and business priorities.
  • Conduct ongoing training needs assessments to identify current and future capability requirements and develop short- and long-term learning strategies that improve safety, efficiency, reliability, consistency, and service delivery.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive framework to measure the effectiveness and impact of training programs across Cargojet stations.
  • Define and monitor key training performance indicators, including completion, assessment results, competency, compliance, knowledge retention, and on-the-job application.
  • Develop and maintain station-level training reporting, dashboards, and performance summaries to provide leadership with clear visibility into training activity and results.
  • Provide oversight and management of third-party ground-handling service providers to ensure contracted services are delivered safely, efficiently, consistently, and in accordance with Cargojet requirements.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with ground-handling providers and serve as a key point of contact for operational and service-related matters.
  • Monitor vendor performance against contractual service levels, operational requirements, safety standards, and agreed KPIs.
  • Lead or participate in regular vendor performance reviews, identifying service gaps, operational risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with internal stakeholders and third-party providers to resolve operational deficiencies and ensure appropriate corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
  • Support the review, renewal, amendment, and ongoing management of ground-handling agreements in collaboration with Procurement, Legal, Finance, and relevant operational stakeholders.
  • Monitor compliance with contractual obligations and escalate significant operational, safety, service, or contractual issues to the appropriate level of management.
  • Conduct or participate in station visits, operational reviews, vendor meetings, and performance assessments as required.
  • Maintain appropriate training, vendor, performance, and operational documentation and provide timely management reporting as required.
  • Ensure compliance with all Company policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and company.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Aviation, Education, Operations, Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressive experience, including strong hands-on experience in air cargo, ramp operations, warehouse operations, ground handling, or a closely related aviation environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of air cargo and aircraft ground-handling operations, including ramp and warehouse activities, operational workflows, service delivery, safety, and operational readiness.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to lead teams and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing training programs and learning solutions.
  • Experience managing third-party service providers, vendor relationships, contracts, or operational service-level agreements is an asset.
  • Strong project management, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, operational teams, subject matter experts, and external service providers.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and utilize various training, operational, and business systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Knowledge of aviation safety, security, SMS, Dangerous Goods, WHMIS, and applicable regulatory requirements is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required company and government security clearances.
