Job summary

Yorkville University in Toronto, ON, seeks a hands-on Manager, Safety & Security to lead day-to-day safety, security and workplace health & safety across campus locations. You will oversee contracted security services, emergency preparedness, and incident response to ensure a safe learning and working environment.

Reporting to the Director, Facilities & Real Estate, you will develop policies, conduct risk assessments, coordinate with local authorities, and drive improvements in safety programs

Qualifications

  • Post secondary education in Security Management, Public Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Criminology, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in safety and/or security operations, preferably in a post secondary, healthcare, public sector, or similarly complex environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily safety and security operations across multiple locations, including oversight of contracted security providers through KPI management, performance reviews, and contract administration to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Coordinate and provide security support for convocation ceremonies, serving as the primary liaison with venue security teams and providing on-site support during events.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor security policies, procedures, and best practices, including emergency preparedness and response protocols.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for safety and security staff and contractors, ensuring alignment with organizational policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Identify risks by conducting workplace safety inspections, security audits, and threat assessments; implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health & safety legislation and support internal H&S programs.
  • Oversee incident reporting, investigation, follow up, and documentation related to security, safety, and workplace incidents.
  • Develop, coordinate, and support emergency preparedness, response plans, and procedures for all campus and office locations, ensuring organizational readiness and effective incident management.
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with local emergency services, police, regulatory agencies, community organizations, and peer institutions to support emergency response, preparedness, and ongoing security initiatives.
  • Support and coordinate safety and security, ensuring that required H&S training for security personnel, employees, and the broader campus community is compliant across all locations.
  • Assist with the development and distribution of safety and security communications, alerts, including public safety notifications and prevention initiatives.
  • Support in developing proposals for existing and/or new systems (or practices), which may result in improved services and cost savings, as well as enhanced student and employee experience.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, reporting, and accountability across all campus and office locations.
  • Oversee the effective use, compliance and maintenance of security systems (e.g., access control, video surveillance, incident reporting platforms).
  • Support budget planning for safety and security operations, operating within approved resources.
  • Monitor contractor performance and service quality; support improvements as required.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and best practices related to security and occupational health & safety.
  • Experience with security technologies such as access control, surveillance systems, and incident management platforms.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director, Facilities & Real Estate, this role is responsible for ensuring consistent, compliant, and effective safety and security practices that protect students, employees, faculty, and visitors.

The Manager provides leadership to contracted security services, supports emergency preparedness and incident response, and plays a key role in maintaining a safe, secure, healthy office and campus environment. The Manager collaborates with other operational team members to achieve seamless solutions that reflect organizational values and best practices.

Key Responsibilities
Security and Health & Safety Operations

  • Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and best practices related to security and occupational health & safety.
Skills, Experience & Competencies
  • Post secondary education in Security Management, Public Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Criminology, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in safety and/or security operations, preferably in a post secondary, healthcare, public sector, or similarly complex environment.
  • Proven vendor management experience, with a focus on external security & operational partners.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders and authorities in the context of a critical incident or traumatic event, as well as for investigative purposes.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing, collaborating or coordinating security personnel and/or contractors.
  • Demonstrated experience contributing to annual operational planning for security and safety, including participation in budget and resource planning efforts.
  • Practical experience with incident investigations, risk assessments, and emergency response.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health & safety legislation and security related regulations.
  • Experience with security technologies such as access control, surveillance systems, and incident management platforms.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related systems.
  • Ability to travel between campuses and office locations in New Brunswick, Ontario, and British Columbia.
  • This role requires on-call flexibility to support incidents or emergencies outside standard business hours.

This position offers a salary range of $90,000 to $105,000 annually, with placement within the range based on experience, education, and internal equity.
