Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Interprofessional Practice, the Manager, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Recreational Therapeutic Services provides strategic, clinical, operational, and financial leadership for the delivery of rehabilitative and therapeutic services across the organization. As a member of the Therapeutics Management Team, the Manager is accountable for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical services, quality and patient safety initiatives, human and financial resources, and operational performance. Working collaboratively with clinical leaders, professional practice representatives, physicians, staff, and external partners, the Manager ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, evidence-informed care that aligns with regulatory requirements and the strategic priorities of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. The Manager fosters a culture of accountability, innovation, continuous improvement, and interprofessional collaboration to achieve optimal patient, staff, and organizational outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate Degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy required.
- Masters Degree Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy
- 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience required
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario or the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.
- Master's degree in a health-related field, healthcare administration, business administration, or a related discipline preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare leadership, management principles, human resource management, quality improvement, patient safety, and change management.
- Comprehensive understanding of relevant healthcare legislation, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and professional standards of practice.
- Proven ability to lead, coach, mentor, and develop high-performing interdisciplinary teams in a complex healthcare environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, facilitation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational and operational change initiatives while fostering staff engagement and accountability.
- Commitment to patient- and family-centred care, evidence-informed practice, and continuous improvement.
- Excellent organizational, project management, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Recreational Therapeutic Services to support organizational strategic priorities and patient care goals.
- Responsible for the management, operation and organizational effectiveness of the department and program, including managing all aspects of human and financial resources together with developing, implementing and managing short and long-term strategic priorities and quality improvement initiatives.
- Initiates, supports and leads change effectively within the department, program and the organization..
- Collaboratively reviews and revises policies and procedures that will ensure excellent delivery of clinical service and effective departmental and program operations.
- Supports staff in problem solving and decision-making by ensuring all policies and procedures are followed.
- Champion quality improvement, patient safety, accreditation readiness, and risk management initiatives to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-informed care delivery.
- Ensures excellence in patient care and service delivery through continuous quality improvement processes that include planning, quality monitoring, patient safety, and risk avoidance.
- Promotes an exceptional patient and family experience by integrating patient feedback and engagement principles into quality improvement and service delivery initiatives.
- Provide leadership for recruitment, workforce planning, staff development, performance management, employee engagement, succession planning, and labour relations activities.
- Foster a culture of excellence through evidence-informed practice, continuous professional development, research, innovation, and interprofessional collaboration.
- Lead and support change management initiatives that promote staff engagement, accountability, and high-performing teams.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design, implement, and evaluate clinical service delivery models, clinical pathways, and innovative programs that enhance patient outcomes and service effectiveness.
- Advance education, research, and quality improvement initiatives that support professional practice, operational excellence, and organizational priorities.
- Promote a healthy, inclusive, and respectful work environment that supports staff well-being, psychological safety, retention, and professional growth
- Ensure staff practice in accordance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and best practices while fostering innovation, education, research, and professional development.
- Fosters effective employee and labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of hospital policies and collective agreements. Ensures effective strategies in managing staff retention and development, human rights and employment equity. Advocates for competitive and fair salaries and benefits to maximize quality of work life for staff.
- Completes and authorizes appropriate Payroll and Human Resources documentation within timelines.
- Monitors performance expectations of all staff assigned to the department and program.
- Monitors, evaluates and conducts regular performance appraisals of direct reports, provides ongoing coaching and feedback in a positive and supportive manner
- Collaborate with physicians, directors, managers, professional practice leaders, educators, interdisciplinary teams, and community partners to advance service delivery, patient outcomes, and organizational objectives.
- Assists in identifying departmental, program and individual's education needs. Provides educational opportunities that promote personal and professional development of staff. Promotes collaboration with Educational Partners through joint appointments and the provision of educational opportunities for learners.
- Facilitates research opportunities for staff within the department and clinical programs.
- Champions and supports the creation of new knowledge and/or its translation into improved health or service delivery for clients.
