Job summary

Qulliq Energy Corporation in Iqaluit, Nunavut, is seeking a Manager, Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical engineering team and oversee planning, design, and standards for generation systems, including district heating.

The role provides technical guidance on capital and recoverable projects, coordinates research, and ensures designs meet codes and best utility practices while supporting alternative energy initiatives. A P.Eng and PMP are assets; strong leadership required.

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory's communities.

Manager, Mechanical Engineering (QEC-26-027)

Iqaluit, Nunavut

Reporting to the Director, Engineering, The Manager, Mechanical Engineering, is responsible for the research, planning, and certification of the Corporation's generation systems, designs and standards. The position supports the execution of all generation projects by providing engineering support in areas such as system planning, design services, technical analysis, and conducting research. The position also provides technical advice, support, and recommendations to stakeholders as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages the mechanical engineering team and leads the planning and design of new installations, replacements and upgrades to the Corporation's generation systems, including the district heating systems, and ensures that all designs meet or exceed QEC's Generation Standards and all other applicable codes, standards, regulations and best utility practice.
  • Provides engineering leadership and guidance for generation-related capital and recoverable projects, as required, including preparation of technical scope, cost estimates, scheduling, resource allocation, technical specifications and contracts, submission of tenders, contract management, technical evaluations, mechanical testing and commissioning, and supports team to ensure capital and recoverable projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Undertakes and coordinates research, studies, analysis and designs related to power generation equipment and systems, as well as integration of alternative energy systems.
  • Overseas and assists in the design and development of new and existing generations standards and procedures, including stamping design and specifications.
  • Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the mechanical engineering team. May include involvement in Committee(s) and working with other departments, as technical representative for mechanical engineering team, and mechanical asset planning, management and operation, as applicable.
  • Supports development of alternative energy proposals and projects, and leads technical review for mechanical integration and interconnection, from inception to in-service and effective operations.
  • Perform other related ad-hoc duties as assigned
Required Qualifications Include:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng), with immediate eligibility for registration with NAPEG.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
Prior Experience Required:
  • Minimum of seven (7) years' experience in mechanical engineering with planning and design experience in power generation in a utility and/or related environment is an asset.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of management experience in the supervision, mentoring and development of staff.
  • Experience in power generation and alternative energy systems, including generators, heat exchangers, radiators, HVAC, fuel systems, boiler systems and/or district heating systems is an asset.
  • Experience in full scope project management, from inception to commissioning, project close out and effective in-service operations are an asset.

A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $149,128.02 to $179,392.80 and a northern living allowance of $16,328.00 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined-benefit pension program. In addition, subsidized staff housing is available for this position. This position is not included in the Nunavut Employee's Union.

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
