Job summary

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) in Iqaluit, Nunavut, seeks a Manager, Protection, Control, and Metering to lead protection, control, automation and metering services. You will oversee planning, SCADA operations, and ensure compliance with codes and standards while guiding a team of professionals.

The role requires a degree in electrical engineering and several years of P&C and supervisory experience, with assets including P.Eng/PMP and knowledge of Nunavut culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • 5 years of protection and control experience in a utility setting.
  • 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with diesel generated power and control settings.
  • Experience with GE Multilin relay protection systems.
  • Experience updating and maintaining SCADA systems.
  • PMP designation and/or P.Eng designation are assets.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign and supervise protection, control, automation and metering activities.
  • Plan equipment maintenance to conform to codes and standards.
  • Schedule P&C equipment maintenance, repairs, upgrades and capital projects.
  • Manage SCADA related activities.
  • Provide guidance on protective relaying systems and metering maintenance.
  • Ensure metering activities comply with Measurement Canada and industry standards.
  • Ensure accurate meter data and support for Customer Care.

Qulliq Energy Corporation

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) is entrusted to provide safe, reliable power to all customers in Nunavut. Owned by the Government of Nunavut and operated as an arms-length territorial corporation, QEC is the sole provider of electricity and district heating in Nunavut. In comparison to other utilities in Canada, QEC faces unique challenges as it operates 25 stand-alone diesel power generation facilities and distribution systems located in each of the territory's communities.

Manager, Protection, Control, and Metering (QEC 26-022)
Iqaluit, Nunavut

Reporting to the Director, Operations, the Manager, Protection, Control, and Metering, is accountable for the planning, management and provision of all protection and control, automation and metering services for the Corporation. The position will act as the operations lead on protection, control and metering activities and ensures all work performed by the sections meets all the applicable codes and standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans, organized, schedules, assigns and supervises employee activities engaged in protection, control, automation and metering while ensuring safe and efficient operations.
  • Plans all equipment maintenance to conform to applicable codes and standards.
  • Schedules Protection and Control (P&C) related equipment maintenance, repairs and upgrades, and capital projects.
  • Manages Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) activities.
  • Provides guidance on protective relaying systems and metering maintenance, techniques, tools, and standards.
  • Ensures all metering activities adhere to Measurement Canada and utility industry standards.
  • Ensures accurate meter data, meter information, and support is provided to the Customer Care department.
Required Qualifications Include:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Five years of protection and control experience in a utility setting.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience in diesel generated power and control settings.
  • Experience with GE Multilin relay protection systems.
  • Experience in updating and maintaining Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
  • Other closely related tasks as assigned
Assets:
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation is an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language and culture is an asset.
  • The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, and or French is an asset.

A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.

We offer a competitive starting salary range of $148,861.60 to $177,652.80 and a northern living allowance of $16,328.00 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined-benefit pension program. In addition, subsidized staff housing is available for this position. This position is not included in the Nunavut Employee's Union.

Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
