Serving Canadians for over 55 years with a reliability rate of 99.99%, we’re developing more than a dozen new low-carbon district energy systems across North America, including the revitalization and decarbonization of our downtown Vancouver steam plant which will be one of North America’s largest thermal fuel-switch projects and provide downtown Vancouver with renewable energy infrastructure for decades to come.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Controller, the Manager, Financial Reporting leads the coaches and mentors the Accounting team to deliver accounting and reporting as well as supporting the project delivery, operations and business development teams in analysis and decision making. The Manager provides quality and timely financial results to the operations, projects and business development teams and improves financial processes and controls and manages the chart of accounts to improve visibility of financial information. The Manager supports the Controller with review of financial results, treasury and tax processes and liaises with the Financial Planning and Analysis team.

Leadership and Management

  • Provides day to day management of the accounting team through daily mentorship and skill development;
  • Manages the daily workload of the team, delegating or reallocating work as appropriate;
  • Ensures that the team understands and meets timelines including month-end, quarter-end and the annual audits;
  • Attends weekly accounting team meetings, empowering team members to lead the meetings, and helps the team prioritize responsibilities;
  • Conducts ongoing training, coaching and performance management.Leads, manages and coaches direct reports with personal integrity and in an environment of mutual respect, consistent with Creative Energy’s values.

Accounting, Tax and Reporting

  • Manages the day-to-day operation of the Company’s financial control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures, ensuring appropriate accuracy and risk mitigation;
  • Prepares and improves the monthly financial reporting ensuring detailed and accurate reporting, insights and working with FP&A to analyze monthly financial performance and KPIs, and key variances from budget;
  • Prepares annual financial statements and notes and leads the coordination of information to external auditors for the annual audit. Drives efficiencies in the audit process;
  • Prepares other required external financial reports including City of Vancouver compliance and the BCUC Annual Report;
  • Oversees the work of the Project Accountant ensuring that project reports and capital forecasts are prepared accurately and timely and integrated with the overall financial reporting process;
  • Manages working capital including overseeing timely payment of accounts payable and prompt collection of accounts receivable;
  • Ensures compliance with local, province/state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings. This includes the accuracy of GST, PST and HST. Manages outsourced tax compliance activities.

Treasury and Banking

  • Prepares the quarterly financial statements and covenant calculations for the Company’s lenders;
  • Oversees the weekly cash flow analysis and monitors short term cash needs. Makes operating line draws as required and strategically manages the Company’s capital resources.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • CPA accounting designation.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience leading and managing a team of junior and intermediate accounting and finance staff.
  • 5-8 years of related industry experience with demonstrated understanding of technology and other business functions.
  • Sage Intacct experience is highly valued.
  • Big-4 experience is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory impact of BCUC is considered an asset.

Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to collaborate and to build and maintain relationships of trust with internal staff, stakeholders, and key external entities, such as auditors, accounting and tax advisors, and the BC Utilities Commission; committed to providing superior customer service.
  • Solid time management, organizational and planning skills and demonstrated flexibility coping effectively with changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment and the ability to successfully manage and complete multiple tasks within deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of financial reporting standards, particularly ASPE.
  • Excellent problem solving, including helping others solve problems, and analytical skills and able to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail to work with financial data and build financial reports.
  • Strong adherence to, and management of, financial processes and ability to continuously improve business processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive, accountable and results-oriented with the ability to take initiative.
