Job summary

Komatsu is seeking a seasoned Manager, Controls & Automation Engineering for its Hard Rock segment. The role leads global strategy, standardization, and integration of controls across Underground Hard Rock product lines, including loaders, trucks, drills, and bolters.

Job Overview

The Manager, Controls & Automation Engineering, Hard Rock is responsible for leading the execution of the global controls and automation engineering strategy across multiple product lines within the global underground hard rock business unit. The role provides technical and people leadership for the global Controls & Automation Engineering organization, developing a high-performing team that delivers standardized controls architectures and advanced product automation technologies that enhance machine performance, intelligence, safety, reliability, and customer value.

Working closely with global product engineering, software engineering, electrical engineering, product management, quality, and internal automation technology divisions, this position leads the harmonization of controls systems, automation platforms, and software frameworks across product lines while driving the development and integration of autonomous and automated product capabilities.

This position will report to Vice President, Engineering, Hard Rock and will be based in one of the following locationsSudbury, Ontario, Canada;Boksburg, South Africa; Gelsenkirchen, Germany; Tychy, Poland

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Lead global engineering responsibility for the development, standardization, integration, and governance of machine control systems across all Underground Hard Rock product platforms.
  • Own the global controls systems architecture, software integration strategy, and technical governance for UGHR machine platforms including loaders, trucks, drills, bolters, utility vehicles, and associated mining equipment.
  • Drive harmonization and standardization of software, controls, electrical, automation, and integrated machine systems.
  • Establish and govern global software lifecycle management processes including software architecture standards, release management discipline, validation and testing processes, controls integration standards, documentation and change management, and cybersecurity and machine communication standards.
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution of critical machine software, controls, automation, and systems integration issues affecting product performance, reliability, safety, and market readiness.
  • Lead development and mentoring of engineering personnel to improve global software, controls, automation, and systems engineering capability depth.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for product development programs involving integrated machine systems, automation, controls, electrical, hydraulic, and embedded software systems.
  • Member of the global engineering leadership team, providing input and recommendations to improve engineering processes, systems integration, product quality, product reliability, technical capability, and engineering efficiency globally.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Master's degree is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in controls, embedded systems, automation technologies, electrical and hydraulic system integration within an OEM or industrial equipment environment.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated ability leading global engineering organizations and cross-functional technical teams.
  • Experience developing standardized controls platforms and software architectures in a global engineering environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis capability.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a matrix organization.
  • Strong project and program management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Technical Knowledge of Embedded control systems, Electronic control units (ECUs), Industrial and mobile machine communications, Sensors and instrumentation, Intelligent machine systems, Autonomous equipment technologies, Remote operation systems
